  2. And what, please, does SRHR mean?

SRHR should protect • women whose lives are currently endangered by pregnancy. • women currently at risk from genital mutilation, or subject to forced pregnancy, sterilization or abortion • the right of all people, regardless of race, colour, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, family position, age, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status, to equal access to information, education and services related to development, and to sexual and reproductive health • the right of all clients of sexual and reproductive health care information, education and services • all persons against any marriage entered into without the full, free and informed consent of both partners • the right of all persons to reproductive health care services which offer the widest possible range of safe, effective and acceptable methods of fertility regulation, and are accessible, affordable, acceptable and convenient to all users • to protect the right of all persons to the highest possible quality of health care, and the right to be free from traditional practices which are harmful to health • to protect children, women and men from all forms of sexual violence, exploitation and abuse Source: the IPPF Charter of SRHR

FINANCIAL ASPECT$ 7.1 BILLION PER YEAR FOR MODERN CONTRACEPTIVES PREVENTS • 187 MILLION UNINTENDED PREGNANCIES • 60 MILLION UNPLANNED BIRTHS • 105 MILLION INDUCED ABORTIONS • 2.7 MILLION INFANT DEATHS • 215,000 PREGNANCY-RELATED DEATHS • (INCLUDING 79,000 CAUSED BY UNSAFE ABORTIONS) • 685,000 CHILDREN LOSING THEIR MOTHER

  14. FINANCIAL ASPECTEXTRA $ 3.9 BILLION PER YEAR WOULD PREVENT: • 23 MILLION UNPLANNED BIRTHS • 22 MILLION INDUCED ABORTIONS • 14 MILLION INFANT DEATHS • 142,000 PREGNANCY-RELATED DEATHS • (INCLUDING 53,000 CAUSED BY UNSAFE ABORTIONS) • 505,000 CHILDREN LOSING THEIR MOTHERS

  15. But although the wording concerning SRHR in the EU is very strong, funding is not…

Main Purpose and Mission • To advocate the inclusion of SRHR in national and international policies and overseas development aid and to mobilise resources for SRHR • To Raise awareness of the ICPD Programme of Action, the MDGs and the role of sexual and reproductive health • To hold our national governments accountable

  17. Responsibilities of National Governments • Develop policies and programs to guarantee universal access to reproductive health by 2015 • Incorporate reproductive health services into national-level development plans • Allocate sufficient resources • Develop accountability mechanisms • Monitor implementation at the national level and evaluate progress

  18. Aims • To provide an informal forum for the exchange of ideas, information and experience • To provide opportunities to explore possibilities for multi-lateral and bi-lateral collaboration and co-operation, particularly advocacy initiatives • To develop joint projects and/or consortia by individual groupings of the • EuroNGOs members • To provide opportunities for dialogue between NGOs and donors/potential donors • To support members who do have very scarce resources with funding for advocacy activities • To disseminate relevant advocacy letters and statements

  19. Membership • The Membership is meant to promote ownership of the work across the European NGOs. It works as a forum where issues can be debated and prioritised. It meets once a year. • It elects the Steering Committee • It takes formal decisions such as approval of the annual workplan and the annual report, acceptance of new members, etc. • It develops joint initiatives with members and other networks and forms consortia

  20. EuroNGOs membership • At the moment, there are: • 27 full members • 7 associated members • 2 observers (IPPF and UNFPA) • They are representing hundreds of organizations, associations and other voluntary groups at local, regional, national and European level
