  2. What does your pyramid look like? • Your pyramid should have information on the outside of all four sides. • Side #1: List the 3 styles of pyramids used in Ancient Egypt. • Side #2: The names of at least 2 famous tombs should be listed here. • Side #3: At least 4 interesting facts your learned about pyramids should be listed. • Side #4: Share a “Did you know?” fact.

  3. Mastabas • These were the first pyramids built in Ancient Egypt. • A mastaba is a rectangle shaped mud brick building. • It contained a burial chamber and a storage area. • Pharaoh Zoser (sounds like Jozr) wanted a mastaba built for his after-life. However, his adviser, Imhotep redesigned that old design a bit.

  4. The Step Pyramid • Imhotep designed mastabas to sit on top of one another. • This new design is called a step pyramid. • This pyramid was over 200 feet high with six levels. • The largest pyramid was built at Giza for Khufu.

  5. The Great Pyramid at Giza • Pharaoh Khufu had this pyramid built for his afterlife. • This pyramid can be seen from the moon. • This is 482 feet tall; this is almost 5 football fields tall! • Each block weighed over 50 tons, and a piece of paper couldn’t fit between the blocks. • These blocks were made smooth and polished once put into place. It took 20 years to complete.

  6. Why did pharaohs stop building pyramids? • Since the pyramids were so humongous and practically shouted, “Here are piles of jewels buried here!’, robbers knew exactly where to go to take any jewels or riches they wanted. • Even though there were secret passageways to confuse robbers, every one of the 80 pyramids were robbed. • Pharaohs decided their burial grounds needed to be hidden to avoid anyone taking their afterlife needs. • Pharaohs decided to go underground and carve into the rocky sides of the Valley of the Kings.

  7. Pyramids have long tunnels so priests could pray and leave fresh food for the dead person. There is a little city underneath pyramids where people trade items. Riddle for SS bucks! There are beautiful paintings on papyrus on the ceilings of pyramids. These paintings were higher than any ladder could ever go. How did the Egyptians get the paintings on the ceiling? Place your name and answer on a piece of paper. Then, place your paper in the little blue bin by the end of the class period! Check this out!
