  2. Network It is a group of computers connected together in a way that allows information to be exchanged between the computers. The American School of Tampico

Network Purposes • Share a single printer between computers • Use a single Internet connection • Share files such as images, spreadsheets and documents • Play games that allow multiple users at different computers • Send the output of a device like a DVD player or Web cam to your other computers. The American School of Tampico

Network components • Nodes – computers and peripherals • Connecting medium – wires or wireless • Network equipment – NICs, routers, switches or hubs All these pieces work together to allow a computer to send information to another computer on other side of the network.   5. Nodes • It is anything that is connected to the network. The American School of Tampico

  6. Connecting Medium • Thick coaxial cable (10BASE5) • Thin coaxial cable (10BASE2) • Unshielded twisted pair UTP (10BASE-T and 100BASE-TX) • Fiber-optic cable (10BASE-FL and 100BASE-FX) The American School of Tampico

  7. Network Equipment • Network Interface Card (NIC) – every computer (and most other devices) is connected to a network through an NIC. In most desktop computers, this is an Ethernet card (10 or 100 Mbps). The American School of Tampico

  8. Network Equipment • Hubs – a central device where nodes are connected. It takes a signal that comes from any node and passes it along to all the other nodes in the network. The American School of Tampico

  9. Network equipment • Switches – Allow different nodes of a network to communicate directly with one another in a smooth and efficient manner. The American School of Tampico

  10. Network equipment • Routers – Allow different networks to communicate with each other. The American School of Tampico

  11. Types of Network • Local Area Network (LAN) • Wide Area Network (WAN) • Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) The American School of Tampico

  12. Local Area Network • LAN – A network of computers that are in the same general physical location, usually within a building or a campus. The American School of Tampico

  13. Wide Area Network • WAN – A network of computers that are far apart such as across town or in different cities. The American School of Tampico

  14. Virtual Local Area Network • VLAN – A collection of nodes that are grouped together in a single broadcast domain that is based on physical location. • WIRELESS The American School of Tampico

  15. Internet • It is a global collection of networks, both big and small. These networks connect together in many different ways to form the single entity that we know as the Internet. In fact, the very name comes from this idea of interconnected networks. The American School of Tampico

  17. Modem • The word "modem" is a contraction of the words modulator-demodulator. • A modem is typically used to send digital data over a phone line. • The sending modem modulates the data into a signal that is compatible with the phone line, and the receiving modem demodulates the signal back into digital data. • Wireless modems convert digital data into radio signals and back.
