  4. Lecturer problems • “ The students are so stupid to understand what I told them” • “ I finished my job, that is OK. They can’t understand that is not my business” • “ This is my style, I taught more than 30 year. Why I have to changed?”

  5. Lecturer problems • “ The time is over now, the rest of the slides are not so important” • “ Who knows how to run this VDO, it does not work now”

  6. How student learn? • Duck or Rabbit?

  9. First time presenter • Exciting, sweating, shaking, pulse • Too many information • Speak too fast, read the text • No eye contact • Forget important message

  10. Ask yourself basic questions • Who is inviting me? • Why are they inviting me? • What do they want me to say? • Who do they want me to say it to? • What equiptment will be available?

  11. Presentation 4 steps • Plan  objective, target • Prepare  data, structure, timing • Practice  rehearse, review • Present  clear, attractive

  12. Context - structure • Size of the room • Size of the group • Type of presentation • Audio-visual resources available

  13. Content • How much information to transmit? • What sort of information/- Numbers?- Ideas and concepts?- Pictures? • What level of audience?

  14. Style • How much interaction with the audiences do I require? • What are they expecting? • What is the nature and culture?

  15. Do the simple thing • Dress • Eye contact • Attitude • Speech • Articulation • Speed

  16. Lecture – impact on listener • 7% : verbal (words) • 38% : vocal (volume, pitch, rhythm, etc) • 55% : body language

  17. Body Language • Face: expression, smile, head • Figure: posture, clothes, hand • Focus: eye contact, distraction material • Territory: personal space

  18. Before presentation • Go before time 2-3 hr • Test the light, sound, dark spot • Test computer compatibility • Test powerpoint presentation - VDO • Be familiar with presentation aidsmouse presentation, laser pointer

  19. How to present?? • Stand up • Eye contact with audience • Speak clearly and slowly • Use silence • Interactive

  20. Using laser pointer • Pointer points on target • Steady, no fast movement • Should not point to text like “karaoke” • Shaking of pointer reduced by practicing, stabilize to body or podium

  22. Common mistakes in presentation • Different ppt version 2003,2007 • Too small text • Too many slides • Too many colour • This slide is not important

  24. Summary • Keep It Short and Simple (KISS) • Clear message • Body language, eye contact • On time
