Academic Levels • In Germany they begin taking foreign languages in the third grade, by the ninth grade the students are fluent in at least one other language besides German. • In the United States, students start learning foreign languages around ninth grade, first year of High School. It is different in city schools, some start in the fifth or sixth grade, with Spanish, because the majority already has a background in that language.
