  1. All about Astigmatism

  2. What is Astigmatism? Astigmatism is a refractive error that occurs when the curvature of the cornea is egg-shaped instead of spherical shaped. This prevents the light to focus onto the retina and thus it is not refracted properly. Types of Astigmatism 1.Corneal Astigmatism- When the cornea of your eye is distorted and creates problem in clear vision it is called corneal astigmatism. 2.Lenticular Astigmatism- When the distortion is caused in the lens of the eye, it is called lenticular astigmatism.

  3. Causes of Astigmatism 1.Genetics is a very big factor that causes Astigmatism. Most people are born with it. 2.Although very rare, Astigmatism is sometimes caused by keratoconus, a condition that thins and changes the curvature of the cornea. Symptoms of Astigmatism 1.Blurred vision 2.Problem in night vision 3.Eye Strain 4.Eye Irritation 5.Squinting of the eye 6.Mild Headaches

  4. How to treat it? There are several methods that your ophthalmologist may use to correct astigmatism in your eyes: 1.Eye Glasses- This is the easiest way to correct astigmatism. Eyeglasses help light to refract properly providing you clear vision. 2.Contact Lenses- Similar to eye glasses, contact lenses compensate for the uneven shape of the eye thereby correcting your refractive error. 3.Orthokeratology- This is a temporary process to treat astigmatism where one wears rigid contact lenses during the night and may remove it during the day. 4.Implanted Lenses-It is a surgery treatment wherein your eyes’ deformed lens are replaced with other lens that helps correct the shape of your eye’s cornea. 5.Refractive Eye Surgery- There are multiple eye surgeries such as Bladeless Lasik Eye Surgery, Contoura Vision Lasik Surgery, SMILE Laser Eye Surgery & Aspheric Lasik. These surgeries help treat refractive disorders such as Astigmatism, Myopia and Hyperopia.
