  1. Planning Action with ‘Backward Mapping’ Liz Diem, RN, PhD www.chnresources.org

  2. What information would you need if you were planning a trip to tropics? When & where do we want to go? What do we need to get on a plane? How long does it take to get a passport? When do we need to book the hotel and plane tickets to get the cheapest rates? All the other questions we need to know to make reservations: # of friends, budget, etc. www.chnresources.org

  3. Example of Using Backward Mapping in Community Clinical • 3 month community clinical placement in the fall • Community group: older women meeting each week to socialize and improve health www.chnresources.org

  4. Situation at the end of 6 weeks... The team has identified the group’s: • strong interest in reducing falls and osteoporosis, and • a desire for interactive sessions Challenge for the team: • What has to be done, when, to provide a workshop (or presentation with discussion) by the end of term? www.chnresources.org

  5. Begin by deciding on answers to planning questions: • What material will be needed for the workshop/presentation? • How long should it be? • When should it be held? • Where could it be held and is that location available? • Who is going to do what? • What deadlines are needed for collecting material? • When should the rehearsal (pilot test) be held? • How could we organize our activities so everything is done on time? www.chnresources.org

  6. Organize answers starting with furthest date and working backwards… • Date for workshop • Date for pilot test • Date for draft Nov 14 Nov 1 or 7 Oct 21 www.chnresources.org

  7. Finish planning by detailing activities for closest dates • 5. Oct 14 • Book room(s) for workshop • Plan advertising • Gather resources 1. Nov 14 Workshop/ Presentation • 4. Oct 21  • Start advertising • Organize resources 2. Nov 1 or 7  3. Oct 28  www.chnresources.org

  8. Backwards Mapping involves • Determining your objective (what you want to accomplish) and the deadline for the objective • Thinking backwards from your objective to determine what needs to be in place at dates prior to the deadline. www.chnresources.org

  9. Planning Action with ‘Backward Mapping’ Thinking backwards helps get you where you want to be, on time, and fully prepared! www.chnresources.org
