  2. Chief Joseph • Chief Joseph was the leader of the Nez Perce tribe. • He was best known for his resistance to the U.S. government’s attempts to force his tribe onto reservations. • He finally surrendered on October 5th, 1877

  3. Reasons For Fleeing • In 1877 there was a fighting retreat that was led by Chief Joseph and Chief White Bird, and it turned out to be the final and most extended Indian war in the region. • The U.S. government said that the roaming Nez Perce bands should move to the Lapwai reservation in Idaho.

  4. Reasons for Fleeing • “General Oliver O. Howard had a talk with Chief Joseph and gave him and his the rest of his band a 30-day ultimatum with a threat to comply, or else” • Because of that, the bands started to move away reluctantly.

  5. The Escape • They traveled more than 1,700 miles. They stopped at Bear Paw Mountains in Montana. • They were 40 miles away from the Canadian Border and they would be safe if they crossed it.

  6. The Escape • Nez Perce knew that the army will track them down so they ran away. • Knowing that they wouldn’t be able to defeat the whole entire army they fled.

  7. The Results • The government was able to push the Nez Perce onto the reservations. • Chief White Bird refused to surrender so he escaped to Canada with some of the band • Chief Joseph and his band surrendered.
