  2. Education Requirements • Pre-medical undergraduate education (a year of chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, physics, English and calculus. • Attend an accredited Medical School. • Neurosurgery residency program. • Option for sub-specialization.

  3. Application Process- UBC Med School • Minimum academic standing of 85% average to be taken under consideration. • Minimum requirements of 90 credits, with grades from a post-secondary institution. • One set of official transcripts • One year of coursework in: English, General Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry. • Must take MCAT (Medical College Admissions Test).

  4. Job Description • Neurosurgeons are physicians who specialize in correcting neurological problems through surgery. • Surgeries focused on nervous system, spine and brain. • Work long, irregular hours.

  5. Salary Range and Benefits • Salary ranges from roughly $100,000 per year for those with little experience to $750,000 per year for those with lots of experience. • A benefits package can range from $20,000 to $100,000 per year.

  6. Location • Options for working are private practice, colleges and universities or with the federal government. • Private practice is the most popular route as it provides the largest financial benefit.

  7. Current Openings • There is an opening at various Universities across North America, most notably at the University of Illinois. • Also openings at some clinics, for example the Spectrum Health clinic in North Carolina.

  8. Job Appeal • I have always felt satisfaction in helping better the lives of other, so I feel there is no better way to do so than to save their lives and/or give them a better life in repairing their brains and nervous systems. • The only trouble I might have is if I were to mess up and negatively affect someone's life, as I would feel sad and extremely guilty.

  9. Preparation • I can volunteer at the Hospital potentially to get a feel for the environment that I wish to work in. This will allow me to be mentally fit and prepared to work in tense and important situations. • Also, I can learn as much as possible about the human body, most specifically the nervous system, brain and spine.
