  6. What does a Governor do?

  7. Three basic Functions:

  8. Maintain a speed selected by the operator that is within range of governor

  9. Prevent over speeding of the engine that may cause damage

  10. Limit high and low speeds

  11. Generally a governor is used to maintain the speed selected by the throttle lever

  12. Example

  16. How does it work?

  17. As the flywheel turns the fins create an air stream

  18. The air stream is in direct proportion to the speed of the engine

  19. The faster the speed the more air stream

  20. A thin piece of plastic or metal is strategically placed in the path of the air stream

  21. The vane is connected to the throttle via linkage

  22. As the engine runs, the air vane pivots on a pin and attempts to CLOSE the throttle

  23. A spring is also connected to the air vane that wants to pull the throttle wide open

  24. At a set speed (by the throttle lever) the air stream created by the flywheel is constant

  25. If the speed decreases (by a sudden load) the air stream is decreased

  26. As the air stream decreases, there is no air flow to counter the spring=Spring opens throttle increasing speed

  27. CONVERSLY

  28. To prevent the spring from taking over and over reving the engine

  29. The air stream created by the fins on the flywheel create air flow that forces the vane to pull against the spring closing the throttle valve
