  1. WP2b: Action PlanStrengthening the Capacity of FMI in Intelligent Content and Semantics Assoc. Prof. Dr. Krassen Stefanov krassen@fmi.uni-sofia.bg

  2. Background • FMI has strong experience in the field of Intelligent Content and Semantics (ICS) • First main goal: initialize new collaborative research with EU partners in intelligent content and living books • Second main goal: widening the existing joint research in areas of knowledge management, lifelong competence development and digital libraries

  3. Focus • Increase the human resources research capacity in FMI • Build networks with EU research partners • Increase the number of joint research projects in the area of ICS • Build new digital libraries with both educational content as well as with the content related to culture and society

  4. EU Partners in ICS At this moment we have contacts and agreement of the following partners: • Open University, NL • ATOS Origin, Spain • University of Reading, ACET Centre, UK • University of Bozen – Bolzano, Italy

  5. Krassen Stefanov Svetla Boycheva Aleksandre Grigorov Ivan Koychev Preslav Nakov Atanas Georgiev Milen Petrov Martin Ruskov Adelina Alexieva Cornelia Todorova Nikolina Nikolova IliyanYordanov Kalin Georgiev Sergey Varbanov Tihomil Kulev Dimitre Milanov BG Team members

  6. EU partner experts • Rob Coper (Open University) • Eric Kluifhoiut (Open University) • Slavi Stoyanov (Open University) • Daniel Burgos (ATOS Origin) • Gabriela Dodero (University of Bozen) • Vasil Alexandrov (University of Reading) • … (to be defined later)

  7. Work Programme • Task 1: Determining joint research agenda in Intelligent Content and Semantics (ICS) • Task 2: Raising the scientific competence of FMI researchers • Task 3: Development of prototypes of intelligent tools supporting generation and maintaining of e-books • Task 4: Creation of digital libraries • Task 5: Development of prototype of Adaptive Intelligent e-Learning System

  8. Task 1: Research Agenda During the initial project phase, and in parallel with the WP1 activities, a joint research agenda in the area of ICS was determined, which will underpin the Post Docs and PhD research activities, the special seminars and workshops in the area, as well as will be targeted at a joint FP7 research project in ICT.

  9. Research Agenda Topics • Knowledge resources sharing and management • Designing highly interactive, adaptable and intelligent book-related services • Developing new generation of intelligent and semantically annotated content • Using ontologies and semantic annotation for intelligent search engines

  10. Research Agenda Topics (2) • Creation of digital libraries with intelligent content • Development of new methods for semantic annotation of the learning content in the repositories • Development of intelligent learning models • Implementation of pedagogically-driven and semantically-enhanced adaptive learning systems

  11. Task 2: Research collaboration • Expanding and enlarging the joint research activities in the frame of ShareTec and TENCompetence projects • Organization of mobility visits (for courses, research and implementation activities) • Organization of research workshops, seminars and winter / summer schools • Preparation of new research proposals

  12. Task 3: e-Books • Continue to build research community around e-book domain • Develop technologies facilitating creation and use of new generation of “alive” books • Build set of tools and integrate them into proof-of-concept intelligent framework for collaborative e-book writing and reading

  13. Task 4: Digital Libraries • Create repositories with digital content and enable their intelligent management • Automate the process of creation and use of learning content for BSc and MSc courses • Develop scientific digital library containing reports, publications, projects, theses. • Implement digital libraries in other domains like teacher training, arts and others.

  14. Task 5: Development of Adaptive Intelligent E-learning system • Design of the system • Develop the first prototype • Implement the first prototype • Pilot experiments and evaluation • Implementation of the full system • Validation and dissemination

  15. First workshops organized • Open PhD Workshop on Technology-Enhanced Learning and Semantics, Software and Services, as a part of the 13th International Conference AIMSA'2008 - AI@Work, 03 September, Varna, Bulgaria • TENCompetence workshop Stimulating Personal Development and Knowledge Sharing (30-31 October 2008, Sofia)

  16. Underpin research activities • Five mobility visits realized to EU partners • About 16 research papers delivered • One approved RTD project from the eContentplus program • Several RTD projects submitted to the National Research Fund for approval

  17. Joint research Agenda • Detailed and specific working plan for the first year approved with OU-NL • Specific work plan and Memorandum of Understanding agreed with ATOS • Research agenda for the joint PhD students Program agreed with University of Reading • Joint research agenda under preparation with University of Bolzano

  18. Questions and Discussion • Questions ?
