Vision mission

VISION & MISSION

It is the aim of the Division for Study Finance to provide a strategic recruiting mechanism for the University of Pretoria.

An effective, efficient and timely support service is rendered via the Client Service Centre to undergraduate and postgraduate students that hold academic potential & financial need.


Bursaries new undergraduates

BURSARIES – NEW UNDERGRADUATES

  • Achievement bursaries for new undergraduates

    • New first-year students undertaking study at UP for the first time after completing Gr 12.

    • Awarded automatically to registered, qualifying new undergraduates

    • Only South African citizens / permanent residents / citizenship in a SADC country.

    • Criterion is the average of actual percentages obtained for all recognised NSC subjects taken, excluding:

      • Life Orientation

      • Mathematics Paper 3

      • Additional Mathematics

      • ABRSM Practical Music

      • Subjects with subject codes of which the first three digits are “999”

    • Average percentage is not rounded off.

    • The awarding of bursaries is finalised on final marks that the University receives from the Dept of Higher Education. Papers re-marked are not taken into account.

    • If a undergraduate achievement bursary holder obtained > 60% for Maths Paper 3, additional R2000 will be awarded.

  • Top achiever bursaries

    • No application required.

    • R 18 700 to each of to the Top 20 new first year students that register at UP. Identified in accordance with the criteria for new undergraduate achievement bursaries.

    • Top Grade 12 (Dux) scholars at top feeder schools: An amount equal to the initial payment for tuition (R 3 200). Awarded to at least 70 of the dux scholars at top feeder schools.

    • Jnr Tukkie development programme: R 10 700 to top 15 learners with best Gr12 results that participated in the programme

Bursaries general conditions

BURSARIES – GENERAL CONDITIONS

  • Prospective students must first apply for admission to the University. Application for study finance may be submitted only after a student number has been allocated.

  • Bursary holders who change a study programme during the year in which the award was made, the bursary value as initially awarded for the first study programme enrolled for, will remain unchanged. The award will therefore not be cancelled or adjusted upward/downward to align it with consecutive study programmes enrolled for.

  • UP bursaries are fully repayable should students terminate the study programme for whatever reason.

  • Bursaries not awarded to students enrolled for special study programmes.

  • The University reserves the right to amend, without prior notice, the regulations and conditions applicable to the allocation of bursaries and loans.

LOANS

  • NSFAS

    • Study loans at a special interest rate (*80% of Bank Repo rate)

    • Undergraduate students that are South African citizens.

    • The loan amount is determined in accordance with NSFAS financial means test.

    • If a loan holder complies with the conditions and passes all the subjects in the final exams of the year, up to 40% converts to a bursary.

  • UP LOANS

    • To be considered for a UP study loan applicants must provide two guarantors who comply with the conditions as determined by the University.

  • TSENANG LOANS

    • The loan scheme grant loans to academically deserving and financially needy students to cover the cost of the first instalment for tuition payable upon registration (R3 200).

    • Undergraduate students, who are SA citizens, may apply.

    • Applicants must be financially needy and academically deserving.

    • Applications close on final date for registration for the particular academic year.

    • The Dean of Students will make recommendations on the allocation of the loans within the framework of approved policy.

    • Application forms may be collected from the Client Service Centre, UP Main Campus, during the registration period only.

  • EDU-LOAN

    • Study loans are available to registered students at a subsidised interest rate. These loans are repaid in monthly instalments (normally by means of a salary deduction/debit order by a person who is in permanent employment).

  • Closing date:

    • 31 October 2010 (senior students)

    • Last day of registration in Feb 2011 (new first year students)

    • After these dates = late applications, processed subject to availability of funding

APPLICATIONS FOR STUDY FINANCE

  • SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS – CERTIFIED COPIES

    • Proof of Income (payslip /pension advices/audited financial statements),not older than 3 months for the spouse / parents / guardian;

    • If no proof of income or if unemployed, an affidavit per individual stating the source of income/ maintenance/ allowances;

    • If a single parent (never married), an affidavit confirming single parent status;

    • Death certificate if the parent(s) are deceased;

    • Decree of divorce & affidavit confirming maintenance payments, if parents are divorced;

    • Clear copy of ID (applicant and parents / guardian / spouse / all reported family members).

    • Proof of registration for all dependants enrolled at tertiary institutions.
