  2. Romans 3 1Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the value of circumcision? 2 Much in every way. To begin with, the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God. 3 What if some were unfaithful? Does their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God? 4 By no means! Let God be true though every one were a liar, as it is written, “That you may be justified in your words, and prevail when you are judged.” 5But if our unrighteousness serves to show the righteousness of God, what shall we say? That God is unrighteous to inflict wrath on us? (I speak in a human way.) 6 By no means! For then how could God judge the world? 7 But if through my lie God's truth abounds to his glory, why am I still being condemned as a sinner? 8 And why not do evil that good may come?—as some people slanderously charge us with saying. Their condemnation is just.

  3. Romans 3 9 What then? Are we Jewsany better off?No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, 10 as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one;11 no one understands;no one seeks for God.12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;no one does good,    not even one.”13 “Their throat is an open grave;    they use their tongues to deceive.” “The venom of asps is under their lips.”14 “Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.”15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood;16 in their paths are ruin and misery,17 and the way of peace they have not known.”

Romans 3 18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.” 19Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For by works of the law no human beingwill be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin. 21But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

  5. Romans 3 27 Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. 29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30 since God is one—who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. 31 Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law.

  9. Liars and Promises • Verse 2 • Covenant with GOD • Exodus 19:8 • Each side pledges to the other • If one breaks their pledge, the other is free of theirs • Israel and GOD • What will GOD do?

  10. Liars and Promises • If GOD abandons His promise, all of humanity is affected • The promise made to Abraham represents a way out of rebellion and condemnation • GOD’s promise is all that’s left of that covenant • Verse 4

  11. Paul Achtemier “It is the essence of Paul’s good news that GOD will not reply in kind. However faithless humanity may prove to be, GOD remains faithful to His promises, delivered to Israel and through Israel to all humanity. That faithfulness does not, in the end, depend on human faithfulness. And that is finally Paul’s gospel.”

  12. Righteousness and GOD • First of all, there appears to be an argument that Paul is having with an imaginary opponent • Righteousness always carries covenantal overtones • To be “righteous” is to fulfill covenant pledges • Sin is when one fails to do so in the context of that relationship

Distributive Justice • Right standing with a law (legal, forensic) • The problem with this understanding alone is its impersonal nature • Makes GOD out to be an interesting judge, gives power to the law and not GOD, the judge in any courtroom is subservient to the law

  14. Righteousness and GOD • 2. An Attribute of GOD • The moral nature of GOD • GOD cannot do wrong • The problem arises when Paul goes on to say that human beings are “made righteous” • Are they given an infallible nature? • 1 Cor. 5:1

  15. Righteousness and GOD • 3. Covenantal Relationship • To be “just” or “righteous” was to uphold covenant and relationship • To be “unrighteous” destroys relationship • To be “made righteous” is to be put in right relationship • Faithfulness=righteousness (Train tracks)

  16. Righteousness and GOD • The good news is that GOD hasn’t given up, He has decided to keep His word • Rules or relationship • Paul himself kept all the rules (Phil 3:6), but the rules were meant for relationship • Righteousness is not something GOD is, but something He does

  17. The Choice • Verse 9 • We all are in relationship with death and sin • Martyn Lloyd Jones on “belonging to sin” • Col. 1:13-14 • Jews and Gentiles alike • Ants and Everest • GOD is ALPHA and OMEGA

  18. No One • Who is righteous? Who hasn’t broken covenant with GOD? • Everything is broken: minds, motives, will, tongues, relationships • No one seeks GOD? Really Paul? • No one seeks GOD for GOD, they seek Him for what He can do for them (MLJ qoute)

  19. The Horse and the Carrot “Once in a kingdom long ago, a gardener grew a huge carrot, and decided to give it to his prince, because he loved his sovereign. When he gave it, the prince discerned his love and devotion, and that he expected nothing in return. So as the gardener turned to leave, he said, “Here, my son, I want to give you some of my land so you can produce an even greater crop. It is yours.” And the gardener went home rejoicing. A nobleman heard of this incident and thought, “If that is what the prince gives in response to the gift of a carrot, what would he give to me if I gave him a fine horse?” So the nobleman came and presented the prince with a fine steed as a gift. But the prince discerned his heart and said, “You expect me to give to you as I did to the gardener. I will not. You are very different. The gardener gave ME the carrot. But you were giving yourself the horse.” (from a sermon by Charles Spurgeon)

  20. But Now… • Verse 21-26 • Something different and new is happening to not only restore relationship but expand it • What the LAW cannot and did not do this righteousness does! • All of history is about called forth the human will • GOD is throwing open His arms and saying, “NOW!”
