  1. Multiple Modes: Making learning funAsha Chand News Teams and Newsroom Cultures 3rd yr unit in B Comm: Mostly those in journalism major. Few: elective Students work in teams: produce stories for multimedia formats: media output: outcome

Learning Guide: Two assessments: 45%10%: teamwork 1: Research report on team formation, work done: outcomes • - forming, storming, norming, performing • -reflection: contributions, roles, critical events • -what worked, didn’t work: why • -solution: changes: why and how • -incorporate academic theory * Option to write an essay

  3. Assignments: 2. Team portfolio • Select 4 best stories and turn these for multi-media platforms (starting wk 1 each team posts two stories onto their group blog on vuws: Sunday evening deadline) • Include team answers to weekly readings • News of the World summary • Who is a journalist • Blogging debate: summary • Provide explanation/summary on the decision making

The subject is taughtusing multiple modes: • Set Readings: Reporting in a Multimedia World • Discussion of current news • Presentation of answers in class • Pitching story ideas (class) • Submitting 2 team stories each week until wk10 on vuws • Posting edits/comments in group blog (vuws) • FaceBook: communication: mostly for team minutes.

Lectures: 3 • Week One: set ground rules: re communication and feedback, expectations, output • Presentation of theory: importance of teamwork • Psychology perspective: ability to work with others • Economic factors: technology and new media • Leadership/ followership • Newsroom culture: enforcing benchmark of good journalism (editing; importance of knowledge: not just information)

News Market Day: Wk7 • All teams attend lecture: media professional(Mark Dennis: Group Editor FCN: 2011-2012) • Jock Cheetham (SMH training editor: 2009/10) • Each group markets 2 stories (some have pushed luck to present one more: surprised me!) • -Get feedback: many published • One student asked for a job: Is now working on a special ‘Facebook’ project • 2 others have secured work • Handful went onto SMH internship: many working in media now

  7. Is blogging good Journalism:Wk 13 debate • The teams turn into ‘class’ teams: make decisions on speakers/research cases • Learn about options and responsibilities in journalism • Many students have chosen their honours topics from this event

Outcomes • Week 9 surprise: TVS CEO visits tutorials: flags opportunities • Some students or team leaders attend news presentation sessions at TVS: report back to class • Yet others visit Fairfax Newsrooms:I went to Newsroom: Bella Vista (Norwest) • Internship students use group stories in their placements • Work in progress report for portfolio work in wks 8&9 •  Some students have started presenting community loop on TVS • 3 students appointed to manage news website. • By this stage, the 1st yr Introduction to Journalism students have their first story revamped and ready for publication: • 1st year student reps join editorial team as contributors.

The future • Make the website into a news wire service: generate income for a Responsible Journalism scholarship: Western Sydney • Develop unit: some virtual teams: attendance: create a diary on Vuws: manage students/resources: camera, voice recorders • Next year: Involve 2nd yr students: begin mentoring program: populate website • Create space for tweets and blogs on the website • YouTube links

The future Issues/problems: • Some students didn’t have access to vuws • Or the Internet at home or Facebook •  vUWS : did not always work, esp. on Sunday night: deadline • Technology: vUWS: students prefer FaceBook; • Yet others want old fashioned phone and email: allowed use for minutes • Yet others want more moderated team time in class

Learning outcomes • Understand the dynamics of news in an information age  • Develop and deliver stories for multimedia platforms with speed • Work collaboratively • Experience newsroom dynamics: finding, filing, editing, marketing and publishing/airing stories/use facilities in classroom BJLG09 • Develop confidence: negotiation • Rejection (many layers): builds resilience • Understand work cultures: limitations, challenges in teams • Understand people’s behaviours • Create sense of ownership: news product • Leadership, responsibility
