  3. Common Ground: The Need For Change • Partisan times = need for understanding • Inherent problems within our system

  4. Unaffordable Premiums • Monthly premiums too high for some • Nature of capitalism • 18% of non-elderly are uninsured

  5. Discrimination of Pre-existing Conditions • Definition: health condition previously treated • Insurance companies won’t cover pre-existing conditions • Must be paid for out of pocket • Millions of Americans have a pre-existing condition

  6. Time Lapses in Coverage • Definition: a patient looses coverage during life-change • Issues can turn into “pre-existing conditions” • In 2011 ¼ of adults experienced gap in coverage

  7. US Health Care System Was Costly • Spent more on health than OECD average • Spent 15% of GDP on health care • More than twice per capita than OECD average

  8. Goals of Affordable Care Act • Offer more affordable coverage • End pre-existing discrimination • Lower health care system costs • White House Administration promised only positive Changes

  9. The Outcome of the Affordable Care Act • 7+ million signed up for health care • 4% more elderly have coverage • Majority of Americans say ‘no impact’ • More reports of harm than help • Reports of rise in costs, of loosing insurance coverage

Although Flawed, Act Intended to Address Needs • Americans disagree on Affordable Care Act • Flaws in health care system: -unaffordable premiums -discrimination of pre-existing conditions -gaps in coverage -costliness • Affordable Care Act attempted to fix problems • Common ground: SOMETHING needed to be done
