Tabloid Newspaper est. 1843 owned by News Corporation, world’s second largest media conglommerate CEOs & Chairmen: Rupert & James Murdoch stories focused on celebrity scoops and populist news insiders and disguised journalists collected evidence for stories investigations crossed the line when they phone hacked cell phones of abducted-murdered girl, dead British soldiers’ families, etc.

  5. 2007: Arrests made over phone hacking of royal family 2009 – 2010: The Guardian newspaper made further allegations of phone hacking by News of the World that extended to sports, entertainment and political celebrities Sept. – Dec. 2010: NY Times revealed that Coulson was actively involved in the phone hacking scandals; under oath, Coulson denied the claims. January 2011: Andy Coulson resigns as David Cameron’s Communications Director, citing “continued coverage of events connected to my old job at the News of the World January – July 2011: London police begin “Operation Weeting” to further investigate the phone hacking When?

Operation Weeting: Findings • 2002: Phone hacking of MillyDowler’s voicemail inbox • 3000 people’s phones hacked, including families of London Bombings (“7/7”), 2005 • 10 News of the World staff have been arrested • Police accepted “inappropriate payments” from news organizations in exchange for classified information • “Operation Elveden” will further delve into these allegations • Police Chief and Assistant resigned over inappropriate links to former News of the World staff • Police-media relations are questioned: “who polices the police?” (Home Secretary Theresa May)
