  1. Update your 50 Books Log and Genre Chart. Add: Cool Melons – Turn to Frogs! by Issa and Matthew Gollub (Nonfiction or Poetry) Love That Dog by Sharon Creech (Poetry or Realistic Fiction) Any poetry books you’ve read Copy this into your Poetry Terms file: 15. Haiku – 16. Alliteration– 17. Allusion – Finally, start a new Word document called Haiku.

  2. Copy these definitions: • 15. haiku – short poems made up of three lines. The lines usually have a 5-7-5 syllable pattern. Haiku are usually about nature, and originated in Japan. • 16. alliteration – the repetition of the same first letter in at least two words (Ex: Magellan Mariners, March Madness, Sweet Sixteen, she sells sea shells. . . ) • 17. allusion – a reference to a well-known work of literature (Ex: My dad is such a Scrooge when it comes time to give out my allowance.)

  3. Cool Melons – Turn to Frogs! • Listen as I read the story. • At the end of the story, write a one-paragraph response to this question in your file called Haiku: • What did you learn about the life of Issa? Be sure to include detail in your paragraph, and to mention at least one challenge he faced.

Haiku Writing Haiku 1: Visualize any image from nature. • Line 1: Describe the image (5 syllables) • Line 2: Show it in action (7 syllables) • Line 3: Say where the image is (5 syllables) • Ice-covered tree tops • Bending low to the white ground • Outside my window • Haiku 2: Write about an animal • Haiku 3: Write about spring • Haiku 4: Write a haiku using onomatopoeia • Haiku 5: Your choice!
