Thomas Quinn, a fisheries biologist from the University of Washington, claims that the shapes of salmon have evolved to mimic the streams they swim in – whether deep or shallow. Fish that are too big might be eaten by bears. However, big female salmon might also be able to reproduce with a large male. So shallow streams select for smaller individuals, and deeper lakes and rivers produce fish that look like dinner plates.
