  6. HOE LYK DIE VERSKIL TUSSEN RYKDOM EN ARMOEDE IN SA?

  7. Top 20% of the population receives 74.7% of income and the bottom 50% of the population receives 7.8% of income

  8. International comparison Gini-coefficients 2000-2007 Source: World Bank (2010)

  9. The challenge “Those who claim to follow Christ and belong to the kingdom of God for whom overcoming poverty is not a priority are making an empty claim.” - Dewi Hughes: “Power and Poverty” (2008)

  10. Another challenge “Paul would presumably have instructed them (members of the churches he established), to make their extra resources available to the needy, taking the initiative to implement creative measures to assist the poor. Seemingly, this would not have entailed the simple gesture of tossing coins to beggars on the street while keeping them at arm’s length. Instead, it would have entailed getting involved in the lives of the poor, embedding them within their communities in some fashion. ” - Bruce W Longenecker: “Remember the Poor. Paul, Poverty, and the Greco-Roman World” (2009)

  11. The root cause “The gap between the growing technological demand for skilled workers and the lagging supply because of deficiencies in the quantity and quality of education is just one, albeit perhaps the most important, reason for growing inequality.” - Raghuram Rajan (2010)

  12. “ In ancient Israel ‘the pursuit of happiness’, for most people, depended primarily on having land as a basis of individual and family livelihood. In an urbanized industrial society, however, individual and family livelihood depends on having a job. But having a job depends on having an education.” - Horsley (2009)

  13. A thought on charity/redistribution “Charity has the potential to leave the benefactor feeling justified while the fundamental problem goes unaddressed. Charity cannot plummet the depths of economic injustice, but it can mask it. Countering poverty requires measures that operate at the level of deep, cultural structures rather than at the surface level. Only structural reconfiguration has any real hope of introducing equity into economic social relations” - Bruce W Longenecker (2009)

  14. Onderwys en inkomste • Matriek met universiteitsvrystelling: inkomste dubbel so groot as sonder matriek • M- or D-degree:income over lifetime 432% more than just matric

  15. Enrolment in tertiary education as percentage of the eligible age group – Teferra and Altbach, 2003

  16. Education & poverty alleviation ‘Education is the great engine of personal development… It is what we make out of what we have, not what we are given, that separates one person from another.’ – Nelson Mandela, ‘Long Walk to Freedom’
