  1. “Assurances”… Our God wishes for us to know that He is trustworthy and merciful (Micah 7:18-19) “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.” Eph 2:8-9 (NKJV) How can we know that we are saved? (1John 5:11-13)

  2. “God’s Assurances of Salvation” 1 John 5:13

  3. “Salvation” G4991 σωτηρία sōtēria so-tay-ree'-ah Feminine of a derivative of G4990 as (properly abstract) noun; rescue or safety (physically or morally): - deliver, health, salvation, save, saving. - Strong’s

  4. The cross of Christ gives us assurance… Why did Jesus have to shed His blood for our sins? (1Peter 1:18-21) “Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ's behalf, be reconciled to God. 21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” 2 Cor 5:20-21 (NKJV)

  5. The cross of Christ gives us assurance… “For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:6-8 (NKJV) Paul often told others of his salvation and the implications his example has for all men. (1 Timothy 1:12-16)

  6. The cross of Christ gives us assurance… Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? (Romans 8:31-35) “And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.” Acts 22:16 (NKJV)

  7. God has given the “earnest” of the Spirit for our assurance… “In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.” Eph 1:13-14 (NKJV) “Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, 22 who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.” 2 Cor 1:21-22 (NKJV)

  8. “Earnest”/“Guarantee” G728 ἀῤῥαβών arrhabōn 1) an earnest 1a) money which in purchases is given as a pledge or down-payment that the full amount will subsequently be paid Part of Speech: noun masculine A Related Word by Thayer’s/Strong’s Number: of Hebrew origin H6162 Citing in TDNT: 1:475, 80 - Thayer’s Definition

  9. God has given the “earnest” of the Spirit for our assurance… • The longer you serve God the more you will see His promises blessing your life. As we abound in thanksgiving we are motivated to serve. (Philippians 2:1-4) • “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” Eph 6:17 (NKJV) • It is so important that we understand the exceedingly great promises of God. (2 Peter 1:3-4)

  10. God "seals” us with the Spirit for our assurance… • The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God (Romans 8:12-17). • This is similar to being “sealed with the Holy Spirit.” (Eph 1:13-14; 4:30)

  11. “Sealed” with the Holy Spirit G4972 σφραγίζω sphragizō Thayer Definition: 1) to set a seal upon, mark with a seal, to seal 1a) for security: from Satan 1b) since things sealed up are concealed (as the contents of a letter), to hide, keep in silence, keep secret 1c) in order to mark a person or a thing 1c1) to set a mark upon by the impress of a seal or a stamp 1c2) angels are said to be sealed by God 1d) in order to prove, confirm, or attest a thing 1d1) to confirm authenticate, place beyond doubt 1d1a) of a written document 1d1b) to prove one’s testimony to a person that he is what he professes to be

  12. God "seals” us with the Spirit for our assurance… “Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him." John 6:27 (NKJV) “And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while still uncircumcised, that he might be the father of all those who believe, though they are uncircumcised, that righteousness might be imputed to them also” Romans 4:11 (NKJV) Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: "The Lord knows those who are His," and, "Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity." 2 Tim 2:19 (NKJV)

  13. God’s assurances of salvation… • Do you have assurance of where you stand with God? • The Cross of Christ gives assurance! • God has given Christians the “earnest” of the Spirit for our assurance! • God also “seals” us with the Spirit for our assurance!

  14. “God’s Assurances of Salvation” 1 John 5:13
