  2. Member Ethics • Declaration of Istanbul • SATS endorsed • DOH endorsed • “Declaration of Istanbul Custodian Group” (DICG) to provide an on-going organizational framework • Elected SA Monitor = Elmi Muller

  3. Member Ethics • SATS is a TTS member • All members need to be aware of the TTS ethics statement • SATS • Has no role for ethics in the constitution • Who to sanction if at all? • ? EXCO • Decision made: • Role is for HPCSA who SATS should report to • SATS to retain an academic role, and not become an ethics monitor

  4. Conclusion and position statement of SATS members present: “SATS members should comply with the TTS ethics statement, but SATS should remain an organization that primarily promotes all transplantation in the academic field.”

  5. Who’s problem is the press? • 2011 Media Statement by Organ Donor Foundation: • Publishing of organ donor information “appalling” • Organ Donor Foundation considers approaching Media Ombudsman

  6. Who’s problem is the press? • SATS ACTION SUB-COMMITTEE PRESS STATEMENT IN 2011: COMMENT ON TRANSPLANT ORGAN SALES IN SA: (DRS. BRITZ, MULLER, LOVELAND) • “The transplant society (SATS) has in the past made a statement that condemns the practice of trade in organs. Since then we have participated in the drafting of the Istanbul declaration. This document has been endorsed and adopted by SATS and by everyone in the transplant community. • As members of the world transplant society, we have appointed a monitor whose role it is to report any potential breaches of the Istanbul declaration so that early measures can be instituted to prevent a recurrence of the unfortunate events of the past. • As you would expect, members of the society have strong and different viewpoints of what transpired. It is now for the legal processes to run their course. • This is the official stance of SATS.”

  7. Conclusion of members present: • Press should be referred to the President of the Society and the President should engage the press in consultation with the action sub-committee • The action sub-committee is composed of the President, the Secretary and the Treasurer
