  5. Uganda is divided into 100 districts within 4 regions The districts are subdivided into counties. Most districts are named after their main commercial and administrative towns. Each district is divided into sub-districts, counties, sub-counties, parishes and villages.

Economy: • The largest sector in Uganda like most of the African countries is agriculture. • However, the mining and industrial sector also plays a major role. • Whether the recently discovered oil reserves will contribute decisively to its economy remains an open question. • A very huge potential for the economic development lies in the tourism sector.   7. Geography: Climate: The climate is tropical; generally rainy with two dry seasons (December to February, June to August). It is semiarid East Sudaniansavanna in north near Sudan. Landscape: The country is mostly plateau with a rim of mountains. This has made it more suitable to agriculture and less prone to tropical diseases than other nations in the region.

  8. Languages: Official languages: Swahili, English Dialect: Lunganda, Luo, Runyankore, Ateso... Religions: Christian: 84% Muslim: 12% Other religions: 4%

Link has been working in Uganda since 2000. • Link’s Uganda School Improvement Programme is focused on the rural and poor districts of Masindi, Buliisa, Kiryandongo and Kamwenge. • Our work in Uganda is focused at district level on building the capacity of schools, their communities and their supporting structures.

  10. We offer sustainable training and ongoing support at a number of levels for district and school leaders, teachers, and communities. Along with teacher training, we focus on building skills in literacy and numeracy, leadership and financial and curriculum management. • We support the schools we work with to engage in international teacher exchange and school partnership programmes through our Link Schools Programme and our Global Teachers Programme (in Scotland and Ireland).

  11. Link operate programmes in 4 districts: Masindi Less than a quarter of pupils who start their primary education will complete it. It is estimated that in 2010, the population of the district was approximately 285,200. Buliisa The district has just one teacher for every 77 pupils. It was estimated that the population of Buliisa District in 2010 was approximately 88,700 and the annual population growth rate is estimated at 4.0%. Kiryandongo The exact population of Kiryandongo is not known. However, it is estimated that for a radius of 7 kilometres (4.3 mi), from the centre of town, the total population is approximately 13,400, as of January 2011. Kamwenge In this district, there is a lack of awareness of the right to education, leading to a low level of community involvement with schools. It is estimated that in 2010, the population of the district was approximately 363,200.

  14. Step 1. Making contact • Try to make contact with your partner school as soon as possible so that you can begin to agree the aims of your partnership. • Step.2 Conducting a Baseline Audit and Activity • A good place to start is the activity “What do we know about...?” which is just one activity to help evaluate the effectiveness of embedding global citizenship into the curriculum and across the school, available in your link schools teachers pack. • Step.3 Introducing the link to your school • Set up display area for information and artefacts from your partner school and their country. • Hold a whole school event or assembly. • Form a School Partnership Committee with students, staff, school governing bodies and parents.

  15. Step4. Creating a school profile Put together a school profile and introductory letter to send to your partner school. Step 5. Planning for the future You will be sent a copy of Link School’s Programme Partnership Pledge at the start of your school partnership. Step6. Creating a Partnership Agreement This is a working document to help you to ensure that your partnership is as realistic and productive as possible. Step7. Take part in a joint learning project We currently have themed resources on the topics of health and the environment enabling exciting joint learning to take place within the curriculum of both schools.
