  2. OUTLINE • To demonstrate Server 2008 and its deployment features. • Deploy Software to computers and/or users based on certain criteria • Use group policy or WDS (Windows Deployment Services)

  3. MOTIVATION • Demonstrate how Windows Server 2008 can be used as a Deployment tool. • Fully utilize Server 2008 and its components. • Reduce Third-party software in a Windows environment.

  4. Microsoft Windows Server 2008 • Windows Server 2008 contains most of the tools you will need to set up and maintain a domain. • Administrators can manage the network, deploy software, troubleshoot issues, from a remote location.

  8. Setup • Follow pictures are the setup I created. • Used: • 1 Switch • 2 computers • 1 Server • 1 Client • Windows Server 2008 Disc • Windows XP Professional Disc

  9. Procedure • Installed Windows Server 2008 • Added necessary Roles • Active Directory Services • DNS/DHCP Service • File Services • Web Services • Windows Deployment Services (WDS)

  10. Procedure • Configured Roles • Created Domain • Modified Users • Created OU • Added Test users to OU • Selected package to install • Created MSI file to install

  12. Implementation • Created MSI file, used group policy to install software package to computer or user at next login.

  13. Implementation • Link and enforce GPO • Make sure it is properly enabled and review the deployment settings • Log in computer that is receiving deployment and install will run based on settings

  15. PROPOSED SOLUTION • Used simple setup to show functionality • Created OU for testing • Made sure there were no other installs in conflict • Changed default policy so it was not in conflict

  16. RESULTS • Server 2008 is a great way to deploy software and images to computers • No need for Third-Party software to perform functions • Easy to manage under single GUI • Uses already in place MSI files for deployment • Can create other files to deploy

  17. RESULTS • Automatically refreshes • Instant changes • Active Directory users and computers integrated • Works on any computer in domain that can receive selected software

  18. CONCLUSIONS • Works great • Easy to implement • Must have permissions to install programs • Software programs must be ready and packages should be prepared thoroughly
