Calvin - (1509-1564) • Fled to Switzerland after religious persecution of protestants in France • Published first book The Institutes of the Christian Religion • Failed in reform of Geneva Church with William Farel • Believed in predestination • Place in life is already determined when you are born • No one can interpret the bible

Treaty of Westphalia (1648) • Ended the 30 years war • German princes became free from HR empire • Switzerland and Dutch Netherlands become totally independent of HR empire • Sweden gained lands in northern Germany on the Baltic and black sea coasts • Calvinists gained same privileges as Lutherans in the peace of Augsburg • Ruler of each state could determine its own official religion
