Chamberlain needed time to build up Britain’s army because they had still not recovered from WW1. • They were not strong enough to fight a war and they needed the military bigger so they could stand a chance. • Appeasing Germany would give them some time to re-build the army. • The appeasement would also reduce enemy numbers and gain support of possible allies. • Chamberlain wanted a strong military that was able to stand up for itself.

  3. Problems of Re-Building the military • Britain was still struggling with economic issues in the late 1930s so they didn’t have enough money to build a huge army. • There was a choice of either ‘Welfare or Warfare’. Britain couldn’t have both.
