  5. BAT FACTS • There are 900 different species of bats. • Most bats eat fruit. • Bats are creatures of the night. • Bats are the only flying mammals. • Bats have lived on earth for 50 million years. Lisa Frase

  6. MORE BAT FACTS • Bats are not birds. • Bats fly with their hands. • Bats have sonar hearing. • Bats sleep during the day. • Bats hang upside down when they rest or sleep. • Bats clean themselves like cats. Lisa Frase

  7. ECHOLOCATION Bats have a natural “radar” built into their bodies. They can send out high pitched sounds. This helps them to travel around. Instead of seeing with their eyes, they send out sounds and the sounds echo back to their ears. The echoes help them to know their location and to keep them from bumping into things like trees.
