  2. Simulation:Growing Cocoa Beans • You are going to experience what happens to cocoa farmers when they are paid for their cocoa beans. • You will do the activity twice. During the first round you will be independent farmers. • During the second round you will be Fair Trade cooperative farmers.

  3. Mastery Objectives: • Compare the lives of independent farmers with farmers in the Fair Trade cooperative. • Explain how fair trade farmers get a Social Benefit. • Explain how the Social Premium helps farmers.

  4. Record your earnings On your paper write: • Independent farmers earnings $ • Fair Trade Cooperative earnings $ Social Premium earnings $

  5. MATERIALS NEEDED • Your earnings worksheet • Brown construction paper • Pencils • Cocoa bean templates • Scissors • Paper clips • Play money (teacher)

  6. Growing Beans: Independent Farmers • You will “grow” your cocoa beans by making them out of paper. • Use the templates on your tables to help you make quality beans that won’t be rejected by the Chocolate company. • You will have 10 minutes to make the beans and you should try to make at least 25 beans.

  7. Preparing your Beans for Sale • Spread out your beans for inspection, putting them in groups of five.

  8. Selling your Beans • A representative of an International Chocolate Company will come to your table to buy your beans. • You will receive $1.00 for each “sack” of five that the company buys.

  9. Farms • Go to your farms and wait for the signal to begin. • You are competing with other farmers. You want to make more beans and more money than they make.

  10. Grow your cocoa beans

  11. Reporting your income • Write down the amount of money you earned.

  12. Second Simulation • Now you are Fair Trade Cooperative Farmers.

  13. Move to your Cooperatives • Sit three or four to a table.

  14. Growing Beans: Fair Trade Farmer • You will “grow” your cocoa beans again as Fair Trade Farmers. • Cooperate with the other farmers. • Use the templates to help you make quality beans that won’t be rejected by the Fair Trade Chocolate Company. • You will have 10 minutes to make the beans and you should try to make at least 25 beans.

  16. Selling your Beans • A representative of the Fair Trade Chocolate Company will come to your table to buy your beans. • You will receive $1.00 for each sack that the company buys.

  17. Record your earnings • Select someone from your group to keep a record of your earnings and tell you what your group earned.

  19. Social Premium • Your cooperative will also receive a Social Premium of $ 100.00 for each bushel of beans (a bushel consists of 5 sacks) from the Fair Trade Chocolate Company because your cooperative is part owner of the Fair Trade Chocolate Company.

  20. Reporting your income • Record the amount of money your cooperative earned from the sale of your cocoa beans. • Record the amount of money you earned as Social Premium.

  21. Spending your Social Premium • Your Fair Trade farming cooperative will decide how to spend the Social Premium of that your cooperative received. • Decide how your cooperative will spend the Social Premium using the following list as a guide.

  22. Social Premium Choices • New school for the community • New well • Solar cookers for all families • Soap business • Computer Camp in Kumasi for the children • Your ideas Be prepared to share and explain your choices.

  23. Compare & Contrast • Compare the lives of independent farmers with farmers in the Fair Trade cooperative. • Why do the fair trade farmers get a Social Benefit? • How does this help them?
