Leukemia

What is leukemia

What Is Leukemia?

  • Cancer that starts in the stem cells of the bone marrow in the body that makes blood cells.

  • Stem cells are then developed into Myeloid and Lymphoid Stem Cells.

  • Myeloid= Red Blood Cell, Platelets, White Blood Cells

  • Lymphoid= White Blood Cells

Different types of leukemia

Different Types Of Leukemia

2 TYPES

  • Lymphoid

    (develop from abnormal lymphoid cells.)

  • Myelogenous

    (develop from abnormal myeloid cells.)

    FURTHER GROUPED

  • Chronic Lymphoid

  • Chronic Myelogenous

  • Acute Lymphoid

  • Acute Myelogenous

So what happens

So What Happens?

  • Leukemia starts

  • when the blood stem cells in the bone marrow make abnormal blood cells known as leukemia cells.

  • Over time, the leukemia cells crowd out normal blood cells.

  • This makes it hard for the white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets to do their jobs.

Symptoms

Symptoms

  • Main Symptoms-

  • Bruising

  • Weakness

  • Bleeding

  • Pain

  • Loss of appetite

Causes of leukemia

Causes of leukemia

None known of…yet!

Increase risks of developing leukemia are:

  • Previous treatment of radiation

  • Exposure to chemicals (benzene)

  • Having a genetic disorder (down syndrome)

  • Family history (a member having it)

Diagnosing leukemia

Diagnosing Leukemia

Blood Tests- Blood is taken and studied to see if the different types of blood cells are normal in number and appearance.

Imaging Studies- Imaging studies allow tissues, organs and bones to be looked at in more detail.

Biopsy-

To diagnose leukemia, cells are removed from the bone marrow.
