  1. The United Nations

  2. The UN formed because all nations agreed that there needed to be an international peace keeping body to prevent another world war because they feared that another world war would bring human civilization to an end. • the United Nations Charter was signed 26 June 1945 • Entry into force of Charter began 24 October 1945

  3. Purpose • the United Nations purpose is to bring all nations of the world together to work for peace and development, based on the principles of justice, human dignity and the well-being of all people while building strong economy(s) after world war 2 to ensure the best living conditions worldwide.

  4. Countries Involved • 193 countries around the world are involved in the United Nations • including Canada • only 3 countries are not involved in the United Nations • Vatican City is not a member for ecclesiastical reasons and has full observer status. • Kosovo • The Republic of China

  5. The UN Today • the role the United Nations play today is no different when the organization was formed . • The United Nations ensure that they will work together to solve all problems whether it is economic or political across the world to ensure a better living for everyone.

  6. Canada & The UN • Canada has been active in the United Nations since its foundation in 1945 and played a key role in drafting the UN Charter - an international treaty that sets out basic principles of international relations. • Today, Canada continues to uphold the UN by actively participating in the organization's activities and providing financial support. Canada consistently brings pragmatic ideas and solutions to the table, from peacekeeping proposals in the 1950s, to creating the International Criminal Court and banning landmines in the 1990s. Today, some of our current goals are to assist war-affected children, or to improve the UN’s management and rationalize the work of its agencies.

  7. Problems They Face • economic growth and environmental protection • A lot of developing countries accuse the UN (and UN agencies) of reflecting a Western viewpoint and being biased towards Western ideas. • building a more safe and secure world. • unemployment rates being the highest of all time
