Daily Schedule • 8:05 – 8:15 – Homeroom/Morning check-in/Uniform check • 8:18 – 9:20 – Math (flexible grouping) • 9:25 - 10:35 – Reading Groups (flexible grouping) • 10:40 - 10:45 – Homeroom • 10:45 - 11:30 – Lunch/Recess • 11:32 – 12:17 – DEAR/Shurley Grammar/Writing/Core Stories/Virtues/Essential 23 • 12:20 – 1:05 – Specials (Tech, PE, Music, Art) • 1:08 – 1:53 – History • 2:00 – 2:20 – SNACK/RECESS • 2:20 – 3:20 – Science • 3:20 – 3:30 – Read A Loud • 3:30 – 3:35 – Homeroom • 3:35 – Carpool .

  3. Behavior Chart/Calendar • Purple = caught being great • Green day = great day, keep up the good work • Yellow day = slow down, make better choices • Orange – still making bad choices, time out to think • Red – office referral/e-mail home *Check homework folder/calendar

  4. Friday Folder (yellow folder) • Comes home every Friday • Completed and graded assignments • Important info from the office, PTO, after school programs, etc. (notes should be minimal as most will be electronic) • Please return empty on Monday * Please use the REDHOMEWORKfolder for correspondence as it is checked daily.

  5. Homework Folder (red folder) • Comes home every day with assignments in it (including Friday) • Even if there is no homework, it will still come home. • Please return the homework folder daily. • Math, Reading, Science, or Social Studies homework • Utilize for notes and paperwork • Initial homework that it was checked.

  6. Flexible Grouping • Formal and informal assessments throughout the year • Math • Reading • Students are placed in groups according to their skill set

  7. Language Arts • Open Court Reading, Phonics and Handwriting (Spalding) • Shurley Grammar • Core Knowledge Stories, Poems, Sayings and Phrases • Step up to Writing • All of these will be integrated during our LA as well as throughout the day.

Reading support at home is critical to your child’s success in reading!How Can I Help? • Practice, practice, practice!!! • Monthly Reading Logs • Sight Words • Spalding Phonograms (On Webpage) • Star Fall Website • Comprehension – Discuss and Ask • (Main Characters, Setting, Problem, Resolution, Connections, Inferences, Purpose of Story) • Play games in the car (Look for sight words, What words can you read, Stretch Words, Books on Tape) • Model good reading (Read to your child) • Never tell your child to sound it out… • Use the 5 Finger Rule when choosing books

Saxon Math • Year will begin with review material/HW may be easy for some now • FOCUS on - Developing Computation Skills - Proper Number Formation - Problem Solving Skills, Concepts, ability to explain math • Homework: - Parents read instructions as necessary - Check homework and assist child as necessary in correcting any errors. Feel free to write what they are struggling with. - Please initial or sign homework – communication that you know what they are learning. - Homework will not be returned. • Points earned for homework turned in on time - 10 points per day on time - 10% deducted – one day late - 20% deducted – two days late - 50% deducted after two days and before the next assessment. -after the assessment, the previous HW is a 0 • Assessments: Every 5-10 lessons (100 pts.) - No longer sent home • Final Grade Weighted: 80% Assessments/20% Homework

History/Science • History – What Your First Grader Needs to Know (WYFGNTK) • We will be doing History composition books • Science – FOSS • FOSS is a research-based curriculum that’s been around for more than 20 years allowing students to appreciate the scientific enterprise, learn important scientific concepts, and develop the ability to think critically. They’re able to do so by actively constructing ideas through their own inquiries, investigations, and analyses. The FOSS program was created to engage students in these processes as they explore the natural world. • One unit per trimester • Solids, Liquids, and Gases • Pebbles, Sand, and Silt • Plants and Animals • Brainpop (U: aacpP: american)

  15. Infinite Campus • Update Information (e-mail addresses can be updated but anything else must go through the front office) • Check regularly • Subjects are weighted • Get the Iphone App – very helpful!!

  16. Communication • Website • Weekend Newsletter will be sent through email then posted to the website by Sunday night • Check individual websites for Math/Reading updates

  17. Volunteers • Room moms will assist in coordinating volunteers for events such as parties and field trips. • Classroom volunteer opportunities • Volunteer Badges

  18. Birthdays • Summer Birthdays will be celebrated • Welcome to bring in treats (individual) • Treats will be passed out during afternoon snack (2:00) • All 1st grade classrooms are NUT FREE
