  2. The Maruyama-Shijo school was formed in Kyoto by Maruyama Okyo, to satisfy the demand for Zen painting, golden screens, and other decorative works of art. Seven Cranes

  3. Maruyama Okyo created a new style which spread to Osaka and Edo; this style emphasized shading and perspective.

  4. Maruyama Shijo painters depicted Japanese bids, animals, hills, trees, farmers, and the townsfolk of Japan. Tigers Crossing a River by Maruyama Okyo

  5. Nagasawa Rosetsu created a pair of screens portraying a bull and a puppy. Bull and Puppy

  6. Past artworks were pleasing to viewers because they were educational and had artistic backgrounds; In the Edo Period, however, everyday subjects like farm animals were painted more often.
