  1. INTENDED AUDIENCE Students that are falling behind in reading, writing and math who are entering 7th, 8th and 9th grades in the 2013-2014 school year. The course offerings in English and Mathematics provide reinforcement of the standards students have not previously mastered, in order to give them the much needed boost to prepare for the next level.

ACADEMIC COURSE OFFERINGS English Language Arts Incoming 7th/8th Grade Students “Charged-Up” Reading Skills In this unit, students make predictions and inferences; find main ideas and draw conclusions; distinguish fact from opinion; and analyze characters in literature. Students are given a rich variety of multicultural and contemporary literature with which to practice these reading comprehension skills. “Charged-Up” Writing Skills This unit teaches students components of the writing process, including generating topics, drafting, revising, presenting and publishing, and peer reviews; analyzing main characters, purpose, and audience; organization and structure; building readers’ interest; and using various styles and techniques. Students learn to write short stories, research papers, responses to literature, and persuasive, compare-and-contrast, cause-and-effect and how-to essays. Mathematics Incoming 7th Grade Math “Boost” This course is packed with games that reinforce and practice math skills. Students will have opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge of number manipulation by applying them to real-world scenarios. Incoming 8th Grade Math “Boost” This course gives students opportunities to create, investigate, and demonstrate knowledge through animations, applications, videos, games, and real-world scenarios. Incoming 9th Grade Algebra Prep Students will love this hands-on math course. Through engaging exercises and assessments students will gain a true understanding of higher-level concepts, such as systems of equations and central tendencies. ALL of the above courses will be offered as blended learning. The goal of a blended learning approach is to join the best aspects of both face to face and online instruction.

ENRICHMENT eLearning Lab (Continued) School and Job Skills This unit develops effective evaluating and communicating skills, including speaking, listening, viewing media, interpreting graphs and maps, and using multimedia and visual aids. Students learn how to improve their vocabulary and spelling through various practices, including analyzing word parts and origins, using spelling rules, and learning homophones. Physical Activity This enrichment option will include structured games, sports activities. eLearning Lab – (all grades) Students will work on the following enrichment courses at their own pace in the eLearning Lab: Science and Technology In this unit, students are introduced to concepts such as scientific inquiry, steps of the scientific method, careers available in science, and the roles of technology in scientific discovery and in everyday life. In addition, students will learn skills such as scientific units of measurement, common calculations and conversions, and forms of data presentation. Business Keyboarding This course will give students the coaching needed to become a keyboarding master. With special downloadable software, they will gain typing speed while learning proper technique. World Studies: Africa As students explore this unit, they learn about the unique geography, rich history, and diverse cultures of Africa’s four regions: North, West, East, and Central/ Southern. Students also examine how the governments and economies in these regions have grown and changed over time. In addition, students learn about the successes Africa has experienced as well as the challenges facing Africa today.

SITE SPECIFIC OPTIONS Cocopah Incoming 6th Grade Math “Boost” Brush up on math skills in this math class specially designed for incoming 6th grade students.  In this class we will “look back” to review and strengthen 5th grade skills while “looking forward” and introducing standards from the 6th grade curriculum.  An added bonus - students will become familiar with the Cocopah campus and make new friends. Incoming 6th Grade Math “Bridge the Gaps” Students placed in advanced math (7th grade curriculum) have some gaps to fill in their math education.  In this class, standards will be taught to help students make a successful transition from 5th grade math to 7th grade math.  An added bonus: students will become familiar with the Cocopah campus and make new friends. Intro to Photography*1st Session only Learn to take your photos to the next level.  In this class we will learn about and practice composition, lighting, and photo editing techniques.  Learn how to shoot high quality photos with a simple point and shoot camera.  Previous digital camera experience is not necessary.  Point and shoot cameras will be available for student use.  At the end of the class the student will leave with a cd of their photos. Exploring Chinese*1st Session only The goal of this summer class is to bridge the gap between 7th graders and 8th graders. Currently there is no exploring class in Cocopah and the 7th graders who want to take Chinese Level One when they move to 8th grade will face a big challenge. Therefore, this course is to be designed to shorten the distance. In this class, students will learn the Chinese sound system, basic characters, and simple sentences, and cultural related issues such as contemporary Chinese society, geography, population, ethnic and regional diversity, holidays and food, sports and arts. By the end of the class, students will be well-prepared to meet the change when they take Chinese Level One. Ingleside TBA Mohave TBA Mountainside Incoming 6th Grade Math “Boost” Brush up on math skills in this math class specially designed for incoming 6th grade students.  In this class we will “look back” to review and strengthen 5th grade skills while “looking forward” and introducing standards from the 6th grade curriculum.  An added bonus - students will become familiar with the Cocopah campus and make new friends. Supai Supai Space Adventures Students will learn about Mars, constellations, robotics and rockets through hands-on activities. Please note: All courses are based on enrollment
