What is an illuminated manuscript? • An illuminated manuscript is a piece of text, or a full piece of text, that has the first letters of each paragraph is made large and is decorated • Manuscripts = a piece of text that is hand written in the Middle Ages • The borders around the text are also decorated and illustrated with miniature pictures and designs • These were commonly used in religious texts and were often posted around the monasteries

  3. Why did they illuminate their texts? • They illuminated their texts to show the wealth and luxury that went along with being literate • Also, because so many people could not read or write, the pictures helped people understand what the text was about

  4. Your Assignment… • You are to create your own “Illuminated Manuscript” • You are to choose one of the passages I have given you – or one of your own – and re-write the passage, illuminating the text • You must illustrate/decorate the following: • The first letter of the passage • The borders of the passage • Use color& your neatest handwriting • This will count as TWO class-work grades • Due: _______________
