Background and History • Exit 28 • Cornelius’ sole interchange • One of two primary east-west connectors • Daily Vehicular Trips • I-77 – 92,000 per day • West Catawba Ave. – 27,000 per day • Catawba Ave. – 26,000 b/w I-77 and Hwy. 21; 15,000 east of Hwy. 21 • Growth – Cornelius and North Meck • Early 90s: Cornelius approximately 2,000 population • Today: Greater than 26,000 • Buildout: At least mid-30,000s

Background and History • Corridor Solution • West Catawba Ave., Interchange, Bookends, and Catawba Ave. • West Catawba Ave., Phase I widening complete • West Catawba Ave., Phase II ranking underway (as early as 2018) • Hwy. 21/Catawba Ave. Intersection - Preliminary Roundabout design • Torrence Chapel/West Catawba Intersection – Study in FY15 • Catawba Ave. – Traffic modeling underway for strategic turn lanes

DDI Roadway Design and Benefits • Vehicular Safety • Eliminates left-turn conflicting movements • Traffic throughput • Eliminate phases at intersections • Left turn free flow (eliminates a phase) • Crossing bridge from off-ramps @ same time as opposing movement (eliminates a phase) • Pedestrian Safety

Construction/Traffic Schedule • June 20th weekend bridge closure • 32-hour continuous period • Friday midnight – 8am Sunday • Detours to Exits 25 and 30 and Westmoreland Road • No through traffic across bridge • Ramps still available as long as not serving a movement that requires bridge crossing • Available: Town Hall to Mooresville, West Catawba to Charlotte • Not Available: Town Hall to Charlotte, West Catawba to Mooresville • Allows for the Traffic pattern shift to the DDI pattern

Alternate RoutesFrom the East Side to the West Side • I-77 North to Exit 30 Griffith St., take a left at the top of the Exit 30 ramp and a left to get back onto I-77 Southbound, and then get off at Exit 28 (also vehicles traveling from Charlotte to the West Side) • Highway 115 North through Davidson and take a left onto Griffith Street, take a left onto I-77 South, then get off at Exit 28 • Highway 21 South; take a right onto Westmoreland Road to the West Catawba Ave. intersection

Alternate RoutesFrom the West Side to the East Side • West Catawba Ave. to Westmoreland Road, then take a left on Highway 21 North • West Catawba Ave. then a left onto Sam Furr Road, then turn left onto I-77 North • I-77 South, get off at Exit 25, left at the top of the exit ramp, then turn left onto I-77 North (also for traveling from Mooresville to the East side)

  10. CATS Village Rider • The Village Rider (VR97) will still be operating during the closure with all stops available, but will have to follow the detours. Scheduled stop times will be different. • During the period of only one lane; the Village Rider will operate as normal. • Call (704)336-RIDE (7433) or visit www.ridetrasit.org for more information.

Construction Schedule • June –~November 2014 – Significant day and night lane closures will occur • Approximately 4 - 5 months • At all times, only one lane open in each direction across bridge • Construction of the medians, walls, permanent traffic signals, sidewalks, etc. • ~November 2014 – Substantial Construction complete • Town’s Aesthetic project will likely begin late 2014/early 2015 • ~6 months • 4 Masonry Abutments • Landscaping
