  2. A modern fleet of ships does not so much make use of the sea as exploit a highway. Joseph Conrad

  3. Ships – The Basics • 90% of world trade moves on a ship • At current population locations without ships half the world starves, the other freezes • Year 1968 8 thousand billion ton miles • Year 2008 32 thousand billion ton miles • Operation of merchant ships contributes directly about $380 billion dollars each yeat to the world economy

  4. You Want BIG????? • Oil Tankers are the largest man made moving machines on the planet!! • Deadweight 306, 085 Tons /1100 ft long • Horsepower 36,000 • Fuel 110 tons a day at $720 ton ($79,200 a day) • Cost to fill up the tank?? Better ask Dad or Mom for a raise in your allowance $5 million • Cargo 2.1 Million Barrels; that is enough to fill up 4.9 million cars equipped with 18 gallon tanks

  5. You Want BIG????? • The world's biggest container ships are about 396meters long • Their engines weigh 2,300 tons, • Their propellers 130 tons, • They can carry an astonishing 11,000 6 meter containers. If that number of containers were loaded onto a train it would need to be 71 kilometers long!

  6. Few Onboard Many to Support • A ship does not operate alone. It depends on a large number of shoreside people for its operations. This includes companies which own & manage the vessels; ports & terminals where cargo is handled; yards for ship repair; services like marine insurance underwriters, ship chartering firms, admiralty lawyers, engineers; computer programmers, voyage managers, pilots, etc… • Our average VLCC has only 26 crew

  7. Why a Job at Sea? • Early Responsibility • Good Wages but a job that is more than just a paycheck • Good Long Term Prospects • Career Flexibility and Job Security • Opportunities to Travel • Long Holiday/Leave periods • A career that is different

  8. More than Ship Drivers • A Standard and Poor's report places the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy 18th in the nation among the top 550 colleges and universities producing Presidents, Vice Presidents and Directors of U.S. companies, in proportion to numbers of graduates.
