  1. Using Technology in a Mathematics Classroom EDTP 607-609 October 23, 2007 Roland O’Daniel

  2. Instructional Focus for Using Technology Reflect on the following questions: • When should my students use technology in class? When should they not use it? • Does my current technology use improve my students' learning?

  3. Instructional Focus for Using Technology (Continued ) • What kinds of software should I use in the classroom, and why? • Does the current technology use in my classroom support the curriculum and deepen content? How? • Do certain uses of technology match certain learning outcomes?

  4. Technology for Technology Sake There is evidence in some studies that learning technology is less effective or ineffective when the learning objectives are unclear and the focus of the technology use is diffuse.  "One of the enduring difficulties about technology and education is that a lot of people think about the technology first and the education later." (Schacter, 1995, p. 11)

  5. Designing Lessons • Technology should be used within daily classroom activities. • Lessons should be made relevant to the student and designed to match their needs and interests within the classroom activities • Lessons should take students beyond mere assimilation of content and superficial levels of understanding to areas of synthesis, analysis, and evaluation.

  6. Dynamic Mathematics software • Geometer’s Sketchpad • GeoGebra • A free and multi-platform dynamic mathematics software for schools that joins geometry, algebra and calculus. • http://www.geogebra.org/cms/ • Geogebra Wiki

  7. Geogebra (Continued) • Instructional Podcasts • Example Applets • Geogebra on Wikipedia • Chris Sangwin's GeoGebra page • Dynamic Mathematics with GeoGebra

  8. In-Class Assignment • Find/explore an example applet/application • Decide how you would integrate it into a lesson • Use in a lab setting for individual exploration, a classroom setting as a demonstration tool, have students create an example so they can get practice with a concept • Something else that the instructor hasn’t thought of • Be sure to think about the issues presented in class • Write up a one page discussion of how you might most effectively utilize Geogebra with your students • For the brave at heart create your own Geogebra Application exploring a concept that you are particularly interested in
