  1. Warm-up: Answer in the chat. Why do we sometimes alter the way we use our language? Do you choose your words wisely? AGENDA • Warm-Up • Whole Class Discussion • Break Out Rooms • Google Form Quiz on “BRAVE” I can determine how a particular part of the graphic novel relates to the overall structure of the story (RL.6.5)3

  2. Let’s discuss the story together. In what ways is middle school dangerous for Jensen? How does he feel about school? How do the characters in the story treat Jensen? What are his reactions and feeling about their words? What does Jensen want to be when he is older?

  3. You’ve got it! • In what way are Jensen and Penelope similar? • In what way are Jensen and Penelope different? • Do you think Jensen’s life was easier or harder in elementary school? • Why do words matter?

  4. Last one! What is a possible THEME for BRAVE?

  5. New Academic Vocabulary Audience- the intended reader or listener. The audience can analyze many Things in the text like author’s style, author’s purpose, and tone. Example: The person or people listening to the story, play, or movie. Style- refers to the way an author uses language (words, sentences, and paragraphs to achieve a purpose. One element of style is word choice. Example: Marie’s mind ran through the night like a roller coaster. She woke in the morning like a zombie. She had little sleep. (The author likes to use similes, so that is a part of his/her style.

  6. more...Academic Vocabulary Word Choice- a technique in which writers choose specific words for precise meaning or to convey a certain tone. Example: If an author is attempting to show how funny something is, they may choose to use the word hilarious instead of funny. Hilarious implies very very funny. Tone- expresses the writer’s attitude, thoughts, and feelings toward his or her subject. Some tones can be formal, casual, conversational, humorous, angry, sarcastic, sad, bitter, serious, etc. Example: Most restaurants today have awful service. It is hard to find people that really want to work. As a patron I despise a server that doesn’t constantly check on me. (The author is speaking about his/her subject using an angry tone.

  7. Discussion Time! Directions: In Google Break-Out Rooms, your group will discuss the following questions about the text. Fill out your own sheet. Turn in when finished. • Who does Jensen think he is meant to be? • How does who he wants to be contrast with how others think of him? • What do you learn about Jensen from the speech bubbles on page 6? • What do you learn about Jensen from the speech bubbles on page 7? • What do you learn about Jensen from the speech bubbles on page 14? • How do the illustrations (drawings) increase your understanding of Jensen as a person?
