In the Beginning… • In the late 1980s • Miami-Dade County was experiencing significant growth in outlying western areas • County Commission sensed urgency in providing transportation linkage • Called on FDOT to explore • East-West Transportation Corridor expansion • Central facility to link all modes of ground transportation and decongest airport access roads

MIC History • Congress adopts Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) in 1991 laying groundwork for MIC’s creative financing • FDOT commissions Parsons Brinckerhoff to conduct East-West Corridor Study • FHWA grants FDOT a ROD in September 1998 • FDOT turns project over to Miami-Dade Transit & Miami Dade Expressway Authority for implementation • FDOT commissions ICF Kaiser to conduct MIC Study • FHWA grants FDOT a ROD in May 1998 • Kaiser assets acquired by Earth Tech 2000 • Earth Tech acquired by AECOM 2008

  5. What is the Miami Intermodal Center Program? • Transportation hub for Miami-Dade County • & South Florida region • First program of its kind undertaken by FDOT • Major partners/stakeholders include • USDOT / FHWA • Miami-Dade County & its transportation agencies • MDX • SFRTA

  6. Create connectivity in Miami-Dade County where none existed • Decongest roads leading to the county’s number one economic generator Why Do We Need the Program?

  7. Connectivity • Serves as a Central Station similar to those found in various urban areas in U.S. • Provides safe & seamless transportation connections • Includes numerous roadway enhancements

  8. Decongestion • Absorbs rental car & shuttle bus traffic at airport • Alleviates traffic tensions on roadways to & from airport • Roadway improvements have enhanced traffic flow on nearby roads & highways • MIC has given Le Jeune Road back to community as a major north-south artery

  11. Rental Car Center Under Construction / Spring 2010 Opening COST: $343M • Relieve airport curbside congestion • When MIA Mover is operational, congestion will be decreased by 30 percent • Secure rental car “shopping mall”

  17. MIA Mover 2012 Opening COST: $303M • County’s contribution to the program • Automated People Mover connecting airport terminals & MIC • FDOT participation— guideway foundations & construction of MIA Mover Station at MIC • Under construction

Miami Central Station Design well underway / Opening 2012 COST: $356M Regional Transportation Hub • Rail hub (Amtrak, Tri-Rail, Metrorail, inter-city rail provisions) • Bus depot (private bus companies such as Greyhound, MDT bus service & other courtesy bus services) • Taxis, private automobiles, bicycles & pedestrians

Employment Opportunities • MIC Program is a major contributor to the local economy • An estimated 76,000 construction jobs & 22,000 permanent jobs created throughout the life of the MIC Program’s planning, construction & operations • Millions of dollars worth of material procurement & services during its construction • Completed MIC facilities will provide future employment opportunities to Miami-Dade County residents
