  2. ACADEMIC STRATEGIC PLANNING COMMITTEE • Carol Brewer, Chair • Committee Members - Barry Brown, Blakely Brown, Perry Brown, Ray Carlisle, Sarah Cullison, Reed Humphrey, Stephen Kalm, Andrew King-Ries, Peggy Kuhr, Mark Medvetz, Jakki Mohr, Sean Morrison, Bill Muse, Andrew Ware

CONTEXT FOR ACADEMIC STRATEGIC PLANNING AT UM • Identify key issues and opportunities to address over the next five years • Aim high to capture the aspirations of the Faculty, Students, and Staff for Academic Affairs • Guide for prioritization and decision making • One area of review for upcoming Accreditation process

Strategic Plan Development vs. Implementation • Strategic Planning Process • Understand the organization’s mission and values and plan for communication and participation (spring ‘08 through present) • Scan the environment to better understand internal and external influences on the organization (summer and fall ‘08) • From the scan, articulate the aspirations of the organization and major issues to address to meet those aspirations (winter and spring ‘09) • Engage the constituents to choose the most pressing issues to address in the given implementation time period (spring ‘09) • Capture the sense of the input received in a planning document - a strategic plan - that points us in the direction to make progress toward our aspirations (summer and fall ‘09)

ENVIRONMENTAL SCAN • Focused on both internal and external influences • Internal Scan Areas - UM student body, access and affordability, the UM work force related to Academic Affairs, academic programs offered, technological capabilities and funding trends • External Scan Areas - demographic trends, technology, trends in K-12 that reach into higher education, economic environment, political and regulatory environment, defining our competitors, natural resource issues, and international factors

Strategic Plan Development vs. Implementation • Implementation Process (beginning winter ‘09) • Convene a coordinating committee composed of representative faculty, students, and staff • Identifythe process to coordinate activities • groups that will be charged with developing specific actions plans (committees, senates, units,etc.) • oversight and governance procedures and compliance • Using the strategic plan as a guide, prioritize actions, both in the near and longterm, in light of current and projected opportunities and constraints • Identify a schedule and process to assess progress • Communicate through all phases of the implementation

Strategic Initiative Areas for Academic Affairs • FIRST INITIATIVE– Cultivate Learning and Discovery in Undergraduate Education • SECOND INITIATIVE - Cultivate Learning and Discovery at the Graduate Level • THIRD INITIATIVE - Create a Coherent Vision for Research and Creative Scholarship • FOURTH INITIATIVE - Build Community through Engagement and Outreach • FIFTH INITIATIVE - Embrace Diversity and Global Engagement • SIXTH INITIATIVE - Improve the Workplace Environment
