Esta es la pregunta que dispara el trabajo de Lev Manovich en su libro El lenguaje de los nuevos medios de comunicación para analizar la configuración de la cultura contemporánea con la emergencia de formas de producción, distribución y comunicación mediatizadas por el ordenador. En este abordaje, los nuevos medios son analizados a partir de las convenciones instaladas por medios anteriores como la imprenta, la fotografía y el cine.
