Partnership with BGU FOHS • A significant majority of FOHS teaching takes place at Soroka • All clinical teachers on hospital payroll • Faculty recruitment made difficult by • Clalit Health Services budget restrictions • Shortage of physicians in Israel • ‘Unpopularity’ of the Negev • Competition with other hospitals • Association with BGU FOHS helps attract strong candidates

Difficulty in recruiting Physicians • 60% of the area of the country, 16% of the population • Including underprivileged population (27% of Beer-Sheva county are Bedouin) • Average socioeconomic status lower than the rest of the country • Among Israelis who are foreign medical graduates, only residents of the Negev come to Soroka for internship • Higher unemployment, lower average salaries lead to difficulty in spouse employment

Department chairs leaving • Internal Medicine F: Prof. Porath left serve as Medical Director of Maccabbi Health Services • Prof. Potashnik, head of IVF, retired • Prof. Lieberman, head of pediatric endocrinology, retired • Internal Medicine A: Prof. Horowitz retiring in July • Internal Medicine D: Prof. Sukenik retiring end of 2009

  7. Difficulty in recruiting residents • Some specialties particularly difficult e.g. Internal Medicine • Changing characteristics: more chronic patients, shorter admissions, less physician autonomy • Increased workload • Student and intern experience this as well

  8. Recruiting residents • Increased Physician assistants • Added in ED • Added in orthopedics • Research and QA • Attracting residents in certain specialties • Internal medicine • Anesthesiology

  9. Steps taken to increase recruitment • Grants for Israeli medical school graduates: • 50,000 NIS (internal medicine) • $10,000/year (anesthesiology) • Assistance with housing: full rent for 2 years • Assistance with research: funding, protected time

  10. Research • Senior faculty provided with funds to initiate research • Assistance in locating additional funds • Junior faculty: • Research assistants funded by Soroka • Assistance in printing posters • English language editing service • Plan for Research unit next summer
