  2. Location • Located in Pacific Ocean • 2,200 miles off the coast of Chile • 63 miles square miles in size • Hanga Roa is the capital • Subtropical Maritime climate

  3. Mystery How did the monuments get transferred from where they were built to where they were placed? Why are about 880 monumental statues throughout the island?

  4. Easter Island Theories Logical- The statue was lain prone on two long logs positioned vertically. Under these were placed smaller logs upon which the carrying logs were rolled. My Theory- With huge amounts of people the Easter Island inhabitants moved the monuments with human power by tumbling it to its location. Weird- One man wrote that armadas carrying elephants had been blown off course by typhoons and ended up on the island. The man goes on to claim that the elephants were then used as the muscle behind the movement of the monuments.

  5. AGE • The Rapa Nui people had a Stone Age civilization, they were believed to be the creators of the moai’s. • Easter Island seemed to be inhabited from as early to 300-400 AD, later studies showed 700-800 AD, and the most recent scientific evidence has it at1200 AD.

  6. Belief’s It is believed that the statues symbolize male dominance and power throughout the societal structure of the inhabitants. The natives believed they were indwelled by a sacred spirit. The statues that look out to sea are a poignant reminder that man is forever searching and seeking a place of peace and harmony. Despite whatever meaning the early builders may have originally had for these figures, only a sense of loss and hopelessness remains.
