MOL Workplace Initiatives in Ontario • The MOL initiative to reduce workplace injuries by 20 percent in Ontario (announced on 8 July 2004) • Background: • Ontario currently experiences 300,000 workplace injuries per year • 100,000 of these injuries result in lost time • This has an impact on the workers, their families and the community • It also places an additional burden on the health care system, the WSIB and employers • There has been a decrease in workplace injuries over the past 10 years, but the rate of decrease has slowed 1

MOL Workplace Initiatives in Ontario 10% • The Goal: • 20 percent reduction in workplace injuries in 4 years • 60,000 fewer injuries per year = $960 million savings to Ontario workplaces per year • Ministry of Labour Enforcement – Initial roll out (Phase 1) • 200 additional enforcement officers • 6,000 firms targeted initially – top 2% of firms according to accident cost and number of injuries • 4 inspections per year • Ministry of Labour Enforcement – Initial roll out (Phase 2) • Inspections for the next 8% of high risk firms – larger number of firms 6

A Comprehensive and Integrated Approach to Health & Safety MOL WSIB HCHSA Enforcement Claims Management Prevention Strategies Interim Process – Phase 2 Assistance in prevention strategies from the health and safety associations in order to integrate the workplace health and safety system in Ontario 7

A Comprehensive and Integrated Approach to Health & Safety + WSIB Claims Management HCHSA Prevention Strategies HCHSA Involvement in Assisting High Risk Firms (Phase 1) • Will assist high risk firms in the top 2% to meet legislative requirements and implement programs to reduce workplace injuries Health Care Sector Inter Agency Group (WSIB and HCHSA pilot proposal) – Phase 2 • Aimed at next 8% on the high risk firm list • Determine the client’s occupational health and safety needs • Engage senior management from the high risk firm in a commitment to an action plan for service from both HCHSA and the WSIB • Outcomes-driven consulting by both the HCHSA field consultant and the WSIB account manager • Evaluation and measurement of the outcomes of the pilot 7
