  4. Certificate Programs -Require less than 2 years to complete • “Marketable” – provides students with skills that they can take into the workplace and obtain employment • “Transferable” – skills may transfer to other health science programs. • Please refer to the blue sheet titled: • “I am Interested in a Career in the Health Care Industry! Q: Where Do I Begin? • A: Certificate Programs!”

  5. Certificate Programs • Basic Nurse Assistant • Coding Specialist • Emergency Medical Services • Massage Therapy • Medical Assistant • Medical Transcription • Phlebotomy • Polysomnography

  6. Associate Degree Programs • Health Information Technology • Nursing • Radiologic Technology • Respiratory Therapy

  7. I know which Associate’s Degree Health Science Program I would like to enter! • Anatomy and Physiology • BIO 115: Health Information Technology & Polysomnography • BIO 180 & 181: Nursing; Radiologic Technology; Respiratory Therapy • COM 101 Composition • COM 103 Speech Fundamentals • Psychology • MRT 110: Medical Terminology

  8. Applicant Statistics • There were 700 total applicants for the fall 10 Health Science Programs. Of those 700, approximately 154 students were admitted to Health Science Programs. • Nursing had 108 applicants for 48 seats (Fall 2010). • Nursing accepts 50 students in January and August • Radiologyhad 244 applicants for 32 seats; fall admission only

  9. Applicant Statistics • Respiratory Therapy had 110 applicants for 32 seats; fall admission only • Health Information Technology had 136 applicants for 22 seats; fall admission only • Polysomnography had 102 applicants for 20 seats; fall admission only

  10. NEW Nursing Program Admissions Process!! • 1. Ranking score: a. TEAS score in Math and Science (combined raw score)b. If you have completed MVCC’s BIO 180 Anatomy and Physiology prior to application: point(s) will be awarded based on the final grade: C = 1 point, B= 2 points, A =3 points. 2. Residency: Proof of Residency must be submitted with your application.

  11. TEAS Test – What Is It? • Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) • Reading • Paragraph comprehension, passage comprehension, and inferences/conclusions • Math • Whole numbers, metric conversion, fractions and decimals, algebraic equations, percentages, and ratio/proportion. • Principles, and general science.

  12. TEAS Test – What Is It? • Science • science reasoning, science knowledge, biology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, basic physical principles, and general science. • English and Language Usage • knowledge of punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, contextual words, and spelling. http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/nursing/TEAS.htm

  13. Nursing Application Process • Attend an Information Session • Submit the MVCC Enrollment Form • Complete Placement and Admission Tests • Submit a Nursing Application, complete with COMPASS and TEAS Scores http://www.morainevalley.edu/programs/general/1246_admission.htm

  14. Allied Health Admissions Process Criteria • Three factors are used to admit students into the Health Science Programs • The factors are: • Grade point average • Number of college hours completed • Course Success Weighting

  15. Grade Point Average • The higher a person’s GPA, the more points they accrue toward admissions • Examples: • 3.8 GPA earns more points than a 2.5 GPA

  16. Number of College Hours -Weighted Differently for Nursing than for Allied Health Programs • The more college credits a person has, the more points they accrue toward admissions • Examples: • 65 college credit hours earns more points than • 21 credit hours

  17. Success Weighted Courses Program Coordinators have selected certain courses as predictors of student success in health science programs • Each program has a different set of courses identified. • Grades earned in the success courses earn points toward admissions

  18. Points Assigned to Grades in Success Courses • Example: • An “A” in BIO 180 will earn a student 5 success points toward admission to the nursing program • A “C” in BIO 180 will earn a student 3 points toward admission to the nursing program

  19. Health SciencesGPA and Credit Hour Calculations Number of College Hours Points 1-15 2 15.1-30 4 30.1-45 6 45.1-60 8 60+ 10 GPA Points 2.500-2.750 5 2.751-3.000 7 3.001-3.250 9 3.251-3.500 11 3.501-3.750 13 3.751-4.000 15

  20. Points Assigned to Grades in Success Courses – Health Sciences A = 3 points B = 2 points C = 1 point All other grades = 0 points

  21. Success CoursesHealth Science Program

  22. Sample Calculation/Radiology Student has: • Has completed 24 college credits • 3.0 grade point average • Has completed the following success courses with the following grades assigned: • BIO 180 “A” • MTH 101 “B” • MRT 110 “B”

  23. Sample Radiology Student Admission Point Total • GPA (3.0) = 7 points • College credit hours = 4 points • Student has BIO-180 with an A • 3 points X 4 credit hours = 12 points • Student has MTH-101 with a B • 2 points X 4 credit hours = 8 points Student has MTH-101 with a B • Student has MRT-110 with a B— 2 points X 3 credit hours = 6 points

  24. Total Points – Radiology Example • GPA = 7 points • College credits = 4 points • Total points for success courses = 12 for BIO-180 + 8 for MTH-101 + 6 for MRT-110 = 26 Pts • Grand total: 37 points

  25. Your Admissions Score • GPA: • Number of College Credit Hours: • Points/Success Weighting Courses: What is your total score?

  26. Minimum Admission Scores – Fall 2009 • Health Information Technology: All eligible applicants were admitted • Nursing: • 60 (Fall 2010) • 58.9 (Spring 2010) • Polysomnography: 36 points

  27. Minimum Admission Scores – Fall 2009 • Radiologic Technology: 54 points • Respiratory Therapy: 33 points

  28. What Next? • When making your course selection, pay very careful attention to the Success Weighted Courses. • Make an appointment appointment with an Academic Advisor to plan a schedule that will allow you to compete successfully for a seat in one of the health science programs.
