  • 130 Commonwealth Supported (HECS) Places each year - up to 12 international places in 2012

Deakin Medical School

  • Established to address rural / regional workforce shortages

  • Aim to produce ‘work ready’ doctors for postgraduate training

  • Emphasis on:

    • procedural skills

    • chronic disease prevention and management

    • interdisciplinary learning

  • Face to face teaching supported by online curriculum delivery

    • extensive IT infrastructure

    • all students require wireless enabled laptops

Integrated Model of Medical Education in Rural Settings: IMMERSe

  • Students undertake the Year 3 curriculum

  • at a rural group general practice

  • and rural hospital.

  • Visiting specialists contribute to teaching.

  • 2011: 16 students in Ararat, Bacchus Marsh, Camperdown, Casterton Colac, Daylesford, Hamilton, Horsham & Stawell

Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test

  • In March in all capital cities

  • Eligibility: Bachelor degree OR final year of degree

  • Three sections:

    • Section I: Reasoning in Humanities and Social Sciences (MCQ)

    • Section II: Written Communication (two 30 min writing tasks)

    • Section III: Reasoning in Biological and Physical Sciences (MCQ)

      assumes: - 1st year university biology (40%) & chemistry (40%)

      - Year 12 physics (20%)

  • Deakin: Minimum of 50 and 50 in each section

  • Result valid for 2 years

Academic record (Note: only undergraduate level grades are considered)

  • GPA (Grade Point Average) > 5.0 (HD = 7; D = 6; C = 5)

  • Deakin Medical School calculates a weighted GPA

    • Year 1 average mark x 1

    • Year 2 average mark x 2 Sum of these / 3 = GPA

    • Year 3 average mark x 3

  • For students who have completed Honours the GPA is:

    • Year 2 average mark x 1

MEDICAL RURAL BONDED SCHOLARSHIP

  • Australian citizens or permanent residents

  • $24,594 in 2011 (indexed) - tax free, no means test

  • Practise in ASGC-RA 2-5 areas for six continuous years after completion of postgraduate training (including general practice)

  • ‘Scaling’ introduced in 2010: 40% reduction for ASGC-RA 5 practice (to 3.6 yrs)……10% for ACGC-RA2

BONDED MEDICAL PLACE (BMP)

  • 25% of CSP (HECS) places at all Australian medical schools

  • work for length of course in District of Workforce Shortage for specialty:

    • GP – AGSC- RA2 to RA5

    • Other specialists - outer metropolitan RA1 and/or RA2 to RA5

    • All - any Aboriginal Medical Service.

  • within 12 months of Fellowship or 16 years of commencing course

  • incl ‘scaling’ and up to 2y prevocational (PGY1-2) & vocational training
