  1. Becoming Like Jesus Through Worship Luke 4:14-21 Page 1596

  2. The Point: • Through this series we will be looking at our definitions of the five purposes to consider what we are doing in these areas and why we are focused on them in the way at we are. • This will also coincide with the Elder’s and Minister Evaluations that we do every three years.

  3. Our Banner: Come Christmas and Easter or When You Feel Like It. It is About You and God So You Don’t Need a Congregation Let’s See If We Can Meet Your Checklist.

  4. Trying to Balance • Reverence for God • Relatable to today • The Needs and Preferences of the Community • The Needs and Preferences of the Congregation

  5. Words for Worship: • WORSHIP is most often translated from Hebrew – shahah(54 times), bow down, prostrate, or the Greek proskyneo(34 times), to prostrate, to bow to). • In Hebrew, Greek, and English “worship” is a verb – it is active. Worship is the honor, reverence, and homage paid to superior beings or powers, whether men, angels, or God. • The English word means "worthship" and denotes the worthiness of the individual receiving the special honor.

  6. God Focused Worship: • When given to God, worship involves an acknowledgment of divine perfections. It may express itself in the form of direct address, as in adoration or thanksgiving, or in service to God; it may be private, or it may be public.

  7. Jesus as a Man of Worship • Luke 4:14-21 Page 1596 • Lk 4:14 Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. 15 He taught in their synagogues, and everyone praised him. • Lk 4:16 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. And he stood up to read. 17 The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

  8. Jesus as a Man of Worship • Luke 4:14-21 Page 1596 • Lk4:18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, Lk4:19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” • Not Just at Synagogue! • Lk 4:20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him, 21 and he began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

  9. Honouring God as a Group • It appears that from the first, Christians met in homes for private brotherhood meetings, and the time was Sunday, the Lord's Day (Acts 20:7). Christian public worship consisted of preaching - reading and explaining the word of God (1 Cor 14:9), reading of Scripture (Col 4:16), prayer (1 Cor 14:14-16), singing (Eph 5:19), the Lord's Supper (1 Cor 11:17-34), almsgiving (1 Cor 16:1-2), and in the beginning prophesying and speaking in tongues (1 Cor 14:26-40).

  10. “Worship” in the NIV: • The NIV translation uses the word “Worship” 153 times with 109 of those uses in the OT and 44 in the NT. • Hebrews 12:28-29 on page 1878 • Our God is a consuming fire…, • Romans 12:1-2 on page 1763, • We offer ourselves as an act of worship… • John 4:19-24 on page 1652. • We must worship in spirit and truth… • 1 Corinthians 14:26-40 on page 1788. • Congregational worship should be considerate toward outsiders and be done in a fitting and orderly way.

  11. A Part of the Balance: • Worship honours God and it encourages us. • Our focus should be more on what we give than what we receive, but with the right heart and mind we should receive a blessing when we worship as individuals and as a group.

  12. Conclusion: • Worshipping like Jesus relates to the verb of worshipping God, and not ourselves. It is an offering to God gathered through a week of knowing Him and living out His word. Worship is not a weekly pep rally focused on helping us feel good. It is a lifestyle which is lived out privately and publically so that God is honoured.

  13. Conclusion: • On purpose worship is directed by the word of God, it is other oriented, considering the needs of others above ourselves, and it comes from both our head and our hearts. Worship is relational and expresses our connection to God for His work and it is relational to other believers and unbelievers. It is not about us, it is about God and the honour that He deserves. • We honour Him on Sunday as a group and as individuals through the week.

  14. How is Our Balance? • Reverence for God • Relatable to today • The Needs and Preferences of the Community • The Needs and Preferences of the Congregation

  15. Taking It Home: • How does our balance look to you? • Is your focus in worship more on God or on you? • What do you learn as you read of Jesus worshipping? • What are you offering and what do you receive? • How does individual and congregational worship help you become more like Jesus?

  16. Action Group and Small Groups: • Greg Brockman works at organizing the worship schedule and he gathers input from others to help our services honour God. • Join a small group for the personal application.

  17. Becoming Like Jesus through Ministry. • Who do I help and why? Next Week:
