  4. Barcelona • Barcelona ist die Hauptstadt der Autonomen GemeinschaftKatalonien in Spanien. Sie liegt am Mittelmeer, ca. 120 km südlich der Pyrenäen und der Grenze zu Frankreich. Barcelona ist mit über 1,6 Mio. Einwohnern (Stand: 30. Juni 2005) die zweitgrößte Stadt Spaniens und die größte Kataloniens. Der Anteil der in der Stadt lebenden Ausländer beträgt 15,9 % (Stand: 31. Dezember 2005). Bezogen auf die Einwohnerzahl ist Barcelona die elftgrößte Stadt der Europäischen Union. • Im Gebiet der Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona (ca. 630 km²) leben mehr als 3,16 Mio. Menschen. Dieser Zusammenschluss von 36 Städten und Gemeinden befindet sich auf dem Gebiet der Agglomeration von Barcelona (ca. 800 km²), in der etwa 3,9 Millionen Menschen leben. In der Metropolregion Barcelona (Regió urbana de Barcelona) leben ca. 5,3 Mio. Einwohner.
