  3. Voila le conditionnel. Qu’est-ce que c’est? The conditional is a mood not a tense.

  4. When do we use it? 1) To express wishes or polite requests: Examples: Je voudrais une glace. (I would like an ice cream) J’aimerais aller à la plage. (I would like to go to the beach)

  5. 2) To give a suggestion or offer advice: Examples: Tu devrais lui parler. (you should talk to him) A votre place, je lui parlerais. (If I was in your place I would talk to him/her) Si j’etais toi, je lui parlerais. (If I was you I would talk to him/her)

  6. Any verb in conditional = would…. eg: Je voudrais une glace: I would like an ice cream. Devoir in conditional + infinitive= should…… Eg: tu devrais lui parler: you should talk to him. Pouvoir in conditional + infinitive = could……… Eg: Tu pourrais lui parler: you could talk to him.

  7. How do we form it? • Take the future stem • (which is in most cases the infinitive – unless it is irregular). Examples: Manger: manger Aller: ir…..

  8. 2) Add the imperfect ending: Je: ais Tu: ais Il/elle: ait Nous: ions Vous: iez Ils/elles: aient

  9. Examples: Je mangerais Ils auraient J’irais Nous ferions Elle viendrait Vous retourneriez

  10. Note to copy: The conditional is used to express « would » in English ie to express wishes or polite requests eg: I would like: je voudrais. When used with devoir + infinitive it is use to mean should + infinitive and when used with Pouvoir + infinitive it is used to mean could +infinitive. When used with pouvoir or devoir it is used to give advice or offer suggestions. The conditional is formed by taking the future stem and adding the imperfect ending. Examples: Je mangerais: I would eat Ils auraient: They would have J’irais: I would go Nous ferions: we would do Tu pourrais aller: you could go Il devrait aller: he should go

  11. Try these: • Elle (avoir): • Vous (arriver): • Ils (rester): • Je (aller) • Tu (tomber): • Nous (finir):

  12. Try translating these sentences into English: • Si il était riche, il pourrait aller an France. • J’aimerais aller au cinema. • Si j’étais toi, j’essayerais de trouver des autres amies. • Tu pourrais chercher ta soeur? • Vous devriez parler à tes parents.

  13. Try translating these sentences into French: • If I was you I would talk to your parents. • In my opinion you should find another best friend. • In your place I would leave home. • Would you like an ice cream? • If I was you I would go to another school.
