  • Dionysus- god of wine and fertility

  • Held in the city of Dionysia

  • To celebrate and honor Dionysus

  • Honor his resurrection

  • Died in the winter and reborn in Spring

  • Religious festivals turned into dramatic competitions


What happened during the festival
What Happened During The Festival?

  • Celebrated for 5 days

  • All different people came together

  • About 15,000 people

  • All about drinking and sexuality

  • Playwright presented 3 tragedies, a comedy and a satyr

  • Plays were judged

  • Winner got Laurel Wreath

  • Writers, actors, and spectators took part

  • To celebrate Dionysus

  • Playwrights competing to win

  • Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides wrote great tragedies (Greek dramatists)

  • Very competitive

  • Satyr Plays- A combination of a comedy and tragedy, merged into one play.
