  2. The Unconscious Mind Sigmund Freud - 1856-1839 • Freud proposes idea of the unconscious • Thoughts, memories and desires exist below conscious awareness and influence behavior

  3. Psychoanalytic Theory • Attempts to explain personality, mental disorders, and motivation in terms of unconscious determinants of behavior

  4. Psychoanalysis • When patient is relaxed (on couch facing away) and is saying whatever comes to mind (free association/talking cure) to find out what underlying issues are causing problems • Using this technique and his study of dreams, Freud believed he could tap into the unconscious

  5. Freudian Slips • The unconscious is expressed in dreams as well as slips of the tongue (Freudian slips)

  6. Consciousness Conscious - acute awareness Ego: Reality - combines drives of superego and Id Preconscious - not aware at this time, but can become aware Super-Ego: ideals, goals Unconscious- difficult to access, but influential Id: basic, instinctual drives

  7. Defense Mechanisms • Repression • Denial • Displacement • Sublimation • Projection • Rationalization • Reaction formation • Regression
